SAN RAFAEL, Calif---Five players were in double-figures including two with double-doubles as the Point Loma Sea Lions (8-6 overall, 3-4 PacWest) routed the Dominican Penguins (7-7 overall, 4-3 PacWest) 77-52 in a PacWest conference Saturday afternoon.
Haylee Saurette's monster first half, delivering a double-double in the first twenty minutes, helped set the stage for the entire Point Loma roster to get involved.Â
Cara Liggins added another double-double effort for the Sea Lions, who had three others finish with double-digit point totals.
The biggest area of strength for the Sea Lions in the contest was on the glass, where they out-rebounded their opponents by 32. Not only is +32 the largest margin for the Sea Lions on the glass this season, but it's their highest rebounding total and their opposition's lowest all season.
"We did such a good job of limiting them to one shot." Point Loma Head CoachÂ
Charity Elliott said. "We just wanted to compete today for 40 minutes. Defensively, we did a great job of sticking to our game plan and that led to some easier baskets in transition for us."
Point Loma's defense set the tone early and they converted that to an early 11-3 lead. The Sea Lions held Dominican to just 11 points in the first quarter.
The Point Loma offense was propelled byÂ
Haylee Saurette who tallied 17 points and 11 rebounds in the first half alone as the Sea Lions maintained a double-digit lead throughout the first half.
The Sea Lions were dominant on the glass from the beginning, out-rebounding the Penguins 30-16 over the first 20 minutes, en route to a 40-27 lead at the break.
Point Loma's biggest strength throughout the game was its energy and that was no different in the second half. Diving for loose balls, tipping passes and making every decision difficult on the Penguins helped the Sea Lions turn 22 turnovers from Dominican into 22 points.
But the game-deciding area was the rebounding. While Point Loma shot just under 40% for the game, they were just 2-14 from three and they held Dominican under 30% from the field for the ballgame. That turned into nearly 90 rebounds for the entire game, which Point Loma dominated by snatching over two-thirds of the misses.
Point Loma had 23 offensive rebounds and only allowed 5 second chances for Dominican.
Saurette's career-high 18 boards led the effort, while Liggins completed her double-double (13 points, 11 rebounds) in the second half.
"She understands that even if she's not making shots," Elliott said of her senior forward. "These is still something she can do to impact the team and that's rebounding. And that impact trickles throughout our team."
Dominican was able to keep the game from getting away thanks to 7 three's. The Penguins shot a higher percentage from beyond the arc, than inside it.
"We had six people almost in double figures today." Elliott said. "The way we are sharing the basketball is making things easy. They bought in and shared the ball. I'm really proud of them. It was a great hard-fought win on the road."
The victory is an important one for the Sea Lions, who now sit just a game behind the Penguins for 6th in the PacWest standings, with Dominican set for a return trip to San Diego on February 9th.
"We definitely had a mentality change from where we've been as far as competing, being intentional." Elliott said. "It's even more important at this point in the season. Our whole team stepped up and played the way we all know they are capable."
Point Loma will conclude the PacWest road trip on Wednesday, taking on Azusa Pacific at 5:15 pm in Azusa.
