SAN RAFAEL, Calif – Holding onto a fast start, the Point Loma Sea Lions (8-7 overall, 4-3 PacWest) fended off the Dominican Penguins (4-9 overall, 1-5 PacWest) by closing out a 75-65 win on the road Saturday afternoon.
Point Loma staked an early lead behind forward
Kaden Anderson, and while they didn't surrender the advantage, dealt with a hot-shooting opponent in the second half.
"Early in the game our guys did a great job of executing and playing through winning concepts." Point Loma Head Coach
Matt Logie said. "Dominican is an active defensive team that plays a unique style, so it was nice to be able to play from in front."
The Sea Lions started inside with
Kaden Anderson scoring the first two buckets of the game. But the Sea Lions offense quickly honed in from long range.
Myles Franklin,
Brock Mackenzie and
Hugh Baxter all connected from deep in the first half as Point Loma was 7-13 in the period.
Dominican hung around, shooting 40% from the field themselves, but with less than half of the 3-point makes as Point Loma maintained a 41-32 lead at the half.
The second half saw Point Loma push the lead into double-figures on a couple of occasions, but Dominican shot 70% over the first 15 minutes of the half, pulling as close as three points in the closing minutes.
But Point Loma's unselfish play turned into important buckets from
Trey Anderson and
Ben Okhotin as well as
Kaden Anderson. The Sea Lions assisted on 21 of their 23 made baskets in the ball game and clamped down on the Penguin's hot shooting to seal the win.
Of the assists,
Coby Barnes led Point Loma with 7 while Mackenzie was next with 6.
"We have an unselfish group," Logie said. "So when help comes, we are conditioned to make the right play. Brock and Coby had terrific floor games with 13 combined assists."
Kaden Anderson finished with a game-high 21 points while adding 9 rebounds.
Hugh Baxter and Mackenzie each added 11 points.
Trey Anderson, who was a perfect 3-3 from the field including 2 three's, along with Franklin, each finished with 9 points.
"In the last four minutes," Logie finished. "Our guys buckled down defensively and created some turnovers with active hands which allowed us to finish the game from the free-throw line."
Point Loma will continue their road trip on Wednesday, taking on Azusa Pacific at 7:30pm at the Felix Event Center in Azusa.
