(TURLOCK, Calif.) For the second-straight year, PLNU Men's Basketball picked up a win over Stanislaus State in its season opener, as the Sea Lions defeated the Warriors, 73-62, on Friday night.
Â
The win is Point Loma's sixth-consecutive victory in season openers.
Â
"It's always great to get your first win against a good team on the road," Head Coach
Matt Logie said. "Stanislaus is a talented and well-coached team that presents many challenges due to their unique style."
Â
Back-to-back PacWest Player of the Year
Kaden Anderson picked up right where he left off, scoring 15 of his 26 points in the first half, helping PLNU develop a 33-23 halftime advantage.
Â
The Sea Lions held the Warriors to just 30% shooting in the opening 20 minutes.
Â
"I thought our guys really played well on the defensive end, which carried us through some typical first game sloppiness," Logie said.
Â
Stanislaus then had a bright start to the second half, with a 16-7 run getting the home side to within one point at the 14:42 mark.
Â
Two
Wes Slajchert free throws then extended PLNU's lead back up to nine, but the Warriors would not go away, later utilizing a 7-0 run to once again reduce their deficit to just one with 5:27 to play.
Â
Over the next three minutes, Point Loma scored 10-straight points to pull away, helped by a pair of
Brian Goracke 3-pointers.
Â
Shamrock Campbell then scored six of his 14 points in the final minute of regulation, ensuring that the Sea Lions came away with a season-opening victory.
Â
Anderson (26 points, eight rebounds), Goracke (16 points) and Campbell (14 points) all scored in double figures, while
Luke Haupt posted a well-rounded stat line of six points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Â
"Kaden was terrific once again and
Luke Haupt was very solid defensively and stuffing the stat sheet," Logie said. "Shamrock and Brian had very good second halves to help us separate and I thought
Jake Lifgren really gave us a boost off the bench."

Point Loma concludes its participation at the Crossover Classic with a 5 p.m. neutral-site matchup with Cal State East Bay on Saturday in Turlock.
