(SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.) Cal Poly Pomona held PLNU Women's Basketball to just 32% shooting and an average of four field goals made per quarter on Saturday, as the Broncos gave the Sea Lions their second-straight loss to start the 2022-23 season, 72-51, at the PacWest/CCAA Crossover Classic.
Â
CPP scored 19 points in the opening period while holding PLNU to single digits, as the Broncos outscored the Sea Lions in every quarter throughout the game.
Â
After only making a couple baskets in the first, Point Loma tripled that total in the second while shooting 54.5% in the quarter, nearly keeping pace with Pomona in the period.
Â
The Broncos took a 12-point lead into the half, which was as close as the Sea Lions got the rest of the way. CPP extended its advantage to as many as 24 in the second half, before
Kate Bobadilla hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds to knock the final margin down to 21.
Â
That was one of a trio of 3-pointers Bobadilla made on the day.
Haylee Saurette also sank three triples, while
Allie Carreon made a pair, with the rest of the team shooting a combined 0-11 from deep.
Â
Saurette continued her strong start to the season with a near double-double of 14 points and nine rebounds. Bobadilla nearly joined her in double figures with nine points, while another freshman
Maddie Mersch put together a solid stat line of seven points and seven rebounds.
Â
Pomona did a lot of its damage in the paint, outscoring the Sea Lions 30-12 in that area, while holding a 22-7 advantage in points off turnovers after winning the turnover battle by a significant margin, 24-7.
Â
Point Loma (0-2 overall) will look for its first win of the young season on Tuesday when PLNU travels to Cal State San Marcos for a 6:30 p.m. tipoff on Tuesday.
