Landon Bright entered his first year as PLNU Women's Cross Country Head Coach hoping to improve upon the Sea Lions' sixth-place finish at last year's PacWest Championships.
Â
Mission accomplished.
Â
Aubrie Nex earned Third Team All-PacWest honors for the second-straight season, pacing the Sea Lions to fifth place at the conference meet on Saturday at Oyster Bay Regional Shoreline.
Â
PLNU edged out defending conference champion Academy of Art by one point to finish fifth.
Â
"We had a better day than the last couple meets," Bright said. "I think they did a good job of getting out and establishing themselves early in the race. It was a unique course where the start wasn't great but they did a good job handling that and ran a lot closer together throughout the race."
Â
Nex finished in 15th place after crossing the line in 20th position a year ago. The sophomore paced the Sea Lions with her time of 22:09.6.
Â
"Aubrie had a good race," Bright said. "Training for her hasn't been 100% smooth so I think she did what she needed to do and hopefully we can get her back to full strength in a couple weeks."
Â
The next four Sea Lions were all freshmen, with
Ryley Burns (24th – 22:47.6) just missing out on an All-PacWest award by three spots.
Â
Sydney Stevens (34th – 23:26.1),
Maddie Reeves (35th – 23:26.2) and
Elizabeth Satterlee (40th – 23:45.7) rounded out PLNU's scoring five on the day.
Â
"We got some good experience for our freshmen," Bright said. "We know what we need to do the next couple weeks. We had a lot of people coming into the meet with colds and different things, so hopefully we can get them back to 100% and go from there."
Â
Next up for the Sea Lions is the NCAA West Regional on Nov. 19 in Billings, Montana.
Â
"I'm proud of the group and I'm looking forward to the regional meet," Bright said. "I think we have some good momentum coming off of this and are looking to improve upon it."
Â
Point Loma placed 17th at last year's regional meet.
