SEA LIONS START FAST IN WIN OVER PENGUINS

(SAN DIEGO) PLNU Men's Basketball raced out to an 11-0 lead and never looked back in an 80-56 PacWest win over Dominican on Saturday afternoon in Golden Gym.

"I liked how connected we were and how we were playing together," Head Coach Matt Logie said. "Our guys really shared the basketball early and we got out in transition. We were able to step into some open shots and get off to a good start."

The Sea Lions came out firing from deep, hitting a trio of 3-pointers in that streak and shooting 9-for-20 from behind the arc in the first half.

"It all goes back to our guys' unselfishness and willingness to create for one another," Logie said. "Dominican plays a unique matchup zone where you've got to move the ball and you've got to move people.

"You have to turn good advantages into great shots and I thought our guys did a good job of recognizing that both in driving and kicking to shooters, but also in playing inside out."

Shamrock Campbell and Tobin Karlberg each hit three triples in the first half, helping the Sea Lions double-up the Penguins' points going into halftime, 46-23.

With such a sizable lead, Point Loma was able to turn things over to its second unit for much of the second half to seal the victory, with PLNU's reserves outscoring its opponents 24-16 in bench points.

"I like the fact that they did what we do," Logie said of his second unit. "They played within the framework of our group and played to our strengths.

"We have a really deep team. We've had a really tough schedule and we haven't necessarily been able to get as much experience for some of these guys as we would've liked, so it was good to get that today."

Logie specifically highlighted the impacts of Pierce Davis and Wes Slajchert, who each pitched in six points apiece off the bench.

"You saw Pierce on the offensive glass, rolling on ball screens and finishing through contact," Logie said. "Wes was organizing the group, keeping up our defensive intensity and then making shots."

Coming off a big win over No. 21 Academy of Art on Thursday, PLNU didn't let up on Saturday.

"I liked our maturity," Logie said. "We have an experienced group and it takes maturity to be able to bounce back after a high-profile win like that and respect every opponent that steps on the floor.

"Dominican has had a good start to the year and present a number of unique challenges. I thought our guys did a good job of going through the process the last 48 hours of prepping for that and being able to step out today and execute our game plan."

Karlberg led the group with 19 points, while Kaden Anderson (12 points, nine rebounds) and Campbell (11 points) joined him in double figures. Brian Goracke (eight points, six rebounds) and Luke Haupt (six points, six rebounds, five assists) also posted well-rounded stat lines.

Point Loma (6-3 overall, 2-0 PacWest) now hits the road to take on Biola on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

"As a group we're all excited about the opportunity," Slajchert said. "There's no better feeling than going on the road and being tough together and pulling out a win. It's going to be a fun challenge and obviously conference games are a different beast. We just want to keep this momentum rolling."
