SAN DIEGO---
Baxter Halligan dealt and
Otto Kemp belted a grand-slam as the Point Loma Sea Lions (5-0 overall) pulled out a 6-0 victory over the Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks (2-3 overall) Thursday afternoon at Carroll B. Land Stadium.
Point Loma tallied all six runs on just three swings; the grand slam from Kemp and solo homers from
Izayah Alvarez and Halligan while two relievers backed up Halligan to complete the shutout.
Point Loma looked to Halligan to throw up zeroes from the start while trying to figure out NNU starter Kyle Ethridge.
Point Loma didn't get a baserunner against Ethridge until the third when Alvarez drew a one-out walk. One out later, Kemp was hit by a pitch to bring up reigning PacWest Player of the Week
Scott Anderson. Anderson scorched a ball towards shortstop and Alvarez broke towards third, as the ball passed Alvarez it changed directions into left center field, but the umpire at second signaled no contact and Alvarez came to score. But after a NNU protest, the umpires gathered and overturned the call, ruling that it glanced off of Alvarez, and negated the run while ending the inning.
Halligan brushed off the momentum swing and limited the Nighthawks to just two baserunners over the first five innings.
In the fifth inning, Point Loma finally got to Etheridge.
Jake Entrekin walked to lead-off the inning and was sacrificed to second by
Adam Axtell on a picture perfect bunt back toward the mound. Alvarez sharply grounded a ball to short that he legged out for an infield single. With runners on 1
st and 2
nd,
Hunter Otjen flared a single to center to load the bases for Kemp.
The PacWest Pre-Season 1
st Team Selection drove the first pitch he saw well over the right-center field fence, beyond the scoreboard for the grand-slam and the first lead of the game.
That would be all that Halligan would need as the southpaw worked around two singles with just one out in the sixth by inducing an inning-ending double-play.
After an infield single in the top of the 7
th, Halligan struck out the side.
Alvarez had already added his solo homer with two-outs in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead to 5-0. But Halligan came to the plate with two-outs in the bottom of the 7
th and roped his 2
nd homer of the year down the right field line to deliver what would be the final run of the game.
Cayden Rana worked a scoreless 8
th out of the pen while
Matthew Schlesener got the final three outs.
Point Loma continues its season opening winning streak, this time against an opponent ranked in the top 10 in the country, with continued offense power and success. All three of the Sea Lions extra base hits on Thursday were homers.
Halligan adds to impressive start on the mound, now having tossed 13 innings with 15 K's without allowing a run.
Point Loma continues the series on Friday with a double-header against the Nighthawks beginning at 11:00am. The first game is scheduled for 9 innings and the second game is set for 7 innings.
