PLNU EXTENDS STREAK WHILE STOPPING APU

AZUSA, Calif.-Fending off a late rally, the Point Loma Sea Lions (17-8 overall, 13-4 PacWest) extended their win-streak with a 94-88 victory over the Azusa Pacific Cougars (14-7 overall, 11-3 PacWest) Monday night at the Felix Event Center.

The win extends Point Loma's winning streak to eight games while snapping APU's 8 game winning streak. It also gives Point Loma the season sweep over a PacWest rival.

For the Sea Lions, good three-point shooting proved pivotal as they were locked in late despite a ferocious rally from Azusa.

Point Loma jumped out to an 8-point lead five minutes into the ballgame but Azusa hung around largely in part because of their rebounding. At Halftime, Azusa was +8 on the glass with the entire margin coming on the offensive end as PLNU surrendered 9 offensive boards in the first half.

For the second consecutive game, Kaden Anderson and Myles Franklin carried a heavy part of the workload for the Sea Lions in the first half.

The first half was also a battle of attrition as the two teams combined to shoot 30 free-throws in the first 20 minutes. Both teams converted with Point Loma hitting 11 of 12 at the line and Azusa going 15-18.

Point Loma's advantage was their shooting as the Sea Lions shot 51% from the field and 45% from three in the first half.

Kaden Anderson and Franklin each had 13 points at half time as Point Loma held a narrow 44-42 advantage.

Point Loma widened the lead to 65-54 midway through the second half, but never could pull away despite leading the whole period.

Just under four minutes, the Sea Lions and Cougars exchanged three pointers with Point Loma pushing the lead to six before APU pulled the game back within three.

After the timeout, Ben Okhotin's three buoyed the lead back to six and Azusa would never get closer than four despite free-throws down the stretch.

APU hung around in the game by hitting six three's in the second half, but Point Loma seemed to answer each one, connecting on 8-12 from deep in the final twenty minutes to seal the deal.

Point Loma also connected on their free-throws going 25-28 at the stripe on the night, including 14-16 down the stretch.

It's a busy week for the top three teams in the PacWest standings. The Sea Lions will swing from one crucial PacWest matchup to another, traveling to La Mirada on Wednesday to play the Biola Eagles at 7:30pm. Azusa will go to Biola on Saturday.

Point Loma will return home on Saturday to host Concordia for homecoming at 8:00pm in Golden Gymnasium.
