SAN DIEGO-After all the attention the #7 Point Loma Sea Lions (9-0 overall) were getting for the bats, the arms flexed in a 4-0 shutout over the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros (3-4 overall) Friday afternoon at Carroll B. Land Stadium.
Baxter Halligan improved to 3-0 on the year thanks to a tidy 5 inning performance which he racked up 9 strike-outs including seven in-a-row.
Dylan Miller went the rest of the way with a rare appearance out of the bullpen, closing the door with four scoreless innings and added five strikeouts without surrendering a hit.
Halligan set the tone early, striking out the side in the 2
nd and 3
rd innings and extending the streak in the 4
th to keep the game scoreless.
Point Loma pushed across its first run on
Seth Ryberg's RBI single, which plated Halligan, to make it 1-0.
CSUDH built its best chance against Halligan in the top of the 5
th, loading the bases with nobody out. But a line-drive right at second basemen Jason Dumont opened the door to double-up the runner on 2
nd and put a dent in the Toro's rally. Halligan struck out the next better to end the threat and his day on the mound.
Point Loma answered with more support in the bottom of the fifth as
Scott Anderson made an intentional walk to
Otto Kemp hurt, singling home
Izayah Alvarez for the second run of the game for Point Loma. Then with the bases loaded, a wild pitch brought Kemp home and the errant throw to the plate allowed Anderson to score all the way from 2
nd and pushed the PLNU lead to 4-0.
From there, it was Miller's game. The right-hander allowed just one base runner over the final four frames, a walk in ninth. But induced a game-ending double play to keep Point Loma rolling.
It's the third combined shutout of the season for Point Loma's pitching staff which runs its haughty numbers to 97 K's in 75 innings with just 16 earned runs allowed.
The Point Loma offense delivered when it needed to, with Alvarez finishing 3-4 on the day. Five other Sea Lions tallied at least one hit. Dumont walked twice, meaning five different Sea Lions reached base at least twice.
The series, and non-conference play, conclude on Saturday when Point Loma travels to Carson for a single game against the Toros at 11:00am.
