SAN DIEGO— The tidal wave of a raucous green sea and the momentum of the Point Loma Sea Lions (19-8 overall, 15-4 PacWest) swept away the Concordia Irvine Eagles (10-12 overall, 7-9 PacWest) 91-65 on Homecoming night inside Golden Gym.
Another night of excellent shooting from the Sea Lions gave a packed crowd plenty to cheer about. The firing offense was paired with an equally as strong defensive outing to create a recipe for a commanding win.
Point Loma and Concordia traded blows throughout the early stages of the game. Both teams were shooting over 50% after the first eight minutes, and were tied 20-20.
Ben Okhotin went on one of his trademark shooting sprees to break the tie. He had Golden Gym rocking after hitting back to back threes, sending the green sea into a frenzy while hitting a contested three from close to the logo.
Another media time out didn't cool Okhotin down, as he promptly drilled another deep ball.
Hugh Baxter nailed a three of his own to push PLNU ahead by 10.
CUI answered back, quickly bringing Point Loma's lead back to just four with about eight minutes left in the first half.
PLNU's barrage of threes began to fade, but
Kaden Anderson used this as an opportunity to go to work down low. The Eagles had a great amount of trouble keeping him out of the paint.
Point Loma maintained their lead throughout the final minutes of the first half as Anderson kept them ahead 45-38 with consecutive buckets in the paint.
The start of the second half was similar to the start of the first with both teams exchanging buckets through the early minutes.
Brock Mackenzie and
Myles Franklin remained reliable for Point Loma, and their efforts in the second prevented Concordia from finding a way back in the game.
Not only was Anderson a force in the paint on offense, but he rejected four shots on the defensive side. That relentless defense forced CUI into 11 costly turnovers and a once manageable 10 point deficit was turned into a 20 plus Point Loma lead.
PLNU's monumental lead was capped off by an emphatic
Brian Goracke put-back jam. His dunk sent the Green Sea bursting with joy.
Point Loma dominated almost every category as the Sea Lions led Concordia in shooting percentage, rebounds, and assists, while also being far better from deep. Anderson and Okhotin finished the game with 17 points apiece, Franklin had 15 points with a team leading three steals, and Mackenzie and Baxter rounded out the bunch with 14 points.
Point Loma has picked the perfect time to become the hottest team in the PacWest. They remain second, just behind Azusa Pacific-who beat Biola by 1 in La Mirada to retain their spot-but will hope to cap off this impressive win streak with one more against Holy Names. They meet the Hawks at home on Saturday at 3:00pm for Senior Day inside Golden Gymnasium.
