PLNU DROPS PACWEST MATCH TO APU

SAN DIEGO– The Point Loma Sea Lions (3-3 overall) early momentum in doubles was lost in the wind as Azusa Pacific Cougars (5-1 overall) swept 7-0 at the Point Loma Tennis Courts.

The Sea Lions brought the heat early in doubles with leads on courts 1 and 2. But APU took the third pairing 6-3. The APU Cougars were able to fight back and close on court 1.

Point Loma's Tyler Davis & Lukas Schuster had broken APU's serve, but lost momentum, falling in the tie-break.

The loss on court 1, suspended play on court 3 where Alejandro Castaneda & Nabeel Khan were trailing 6-5.

That frustration trickled into the singles matchups as Point Loma fought to hang onto some of their early successes in doubles.

Windy conditions were a tough factor for the Sea Lions finesse.  Nabeel Khan brought the energy on court 1, coming back in the second set 6-2 but succumbed to the Cougar pressure in the third ending 3-6.

Tyler Davis battled to the tie-break in the first set and then won the second 7-5. The Junior out of Redlands found himself down 3-0 in the third set before scoring 4 points in a row. After a few lead changes, the final set ended 10-7 in favor of APU. The Cougars took all 6 singles points, giving them the 7-0 win.

"This was a great experience for the men to compete against highly ranked players." Point Loma Head Coach Curt Wheeler stated as he reflected on today's match. "We can improve tremendously from the lack of comfort that comes from a loss."

Despite the frustration, Point Loma is looking to turn the lessons from Monday's PacWest contest into positive motivation when they return to the court.

The PLNU men's Tennis team head to La Mirada, Calif this Sunday, February 27th to face Biola University at 11:00 am.
