FRESNO, Calif.- Tying the PacWest record for made three-pointers in a game, the Point Loma Sea Lions (13-8 overall, 9-4 PacWest) blew by the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (13-5 overall, 7-4 PacWest) 88-64 Thursday night at the Special Events Center.
Point Loma knocked down 21 three-pointers, tying the PacWest record set by Hawai'i Hilo in 2018 against Fresno Pacific. It's also the most of the DII era for the Sea Lions and the most of the 2000's for any PLNU squad in a single game.
In one of the impressive halves of the season, Point Loma raced out in front thanks to 11 first half three-pointers. The Sea Lions shot 60% from the field in the first half and just under that with a 57% half from deep.
While Point Loma started hot with a balanced attack, the bench instantly caught fire with
Brian Goracke and
Ben Okhotin combining for 27 points in the first 20 minutes. Goracke hit all three of his 3-point attempts and missed just one of his first six shots. Okhotin added three more triples and Point Loma got five more three's from the combination of
Myles Franklin,
Hugh Baxter and
Coby Barnes.
The Sea Lions didn't need to do much rebounding with the way they shot the ball, but still held a +4 advantage on the glass.
Point Loma piled on in the 2
nd half as Okhotin buried four more three-pointers and finished with a game-high 23 points. Goracke added three more triples and chipped in 16 points.
Brock Mackenzie delivered four more three's and chipped in 16 points.
The entirety of the game wasn't just about three-pointers for the Sea Lions. The ball movement was another prolific display of unselfishness.
Myles Franklin led the facilitating with 10 of PLNU's 25 assists.
Kaden Anderson led Point Loma's effort on the glass with a 13 point, 12 rebound performance.
But the Sea Lions didn't need a ton of rebounding as they shot 51% from the field and 21 of 42 from three-point territory.
While the game went back and forth early, Point Loma pulled away thanks to the prolific three-point performance. Seven different Sea Lions made at least one three-pointer.
The win extends the Sea Lions streak to four straight games and keeps them in third place heading into the weekend.
Point Loma wraps up the quick two-game trip to Northern California, taking on Holy Names in Oakland at 1:00pm on Saturday.
