SEA LIONS UPEND VIKINGS WITH FURIOUS RALLY

SAN DIEGO- After dropping the doubles point and a pair of singles matches, the Point Loma Sea Lions (1-1 overall) rallied back to earn their first victory of the season 4-3 over the Portland State Vikings (2-3 overall) Friday morning on the PLNU Tennis Courts.

Amanda Letzring and Thelma Sepulveda won their doubles match and each took down their opponent in singles competition with Samantha Neilson tying the team score at 3. That setup a rally for Angelique Friedrich who overcame a few match points before rallying herself and Point Loma to victory.

While Point Loma dropped the first pairing in doubles, Amanda Letzring and Thelma Sepulveda overcame a 3-2 deficit to win their matchup 7-5 including an impressive service run from Sepulveda winning all four points to take the game. But Point Loma lost the doubles point, the final doubles match.

Portland State took the first point in singles as well to jump in front 2-0 before Letzring got Point Loma on the board with a 7-6, 6-3 win.

Her doubles partner Sepulveda did her thing as well, tying the team score at 2 with a 6-4, 6-3 win.

After Portland State rallied on court 1, it looked like Portland State was ready to seal the match with Friedrich down 5-1 in set two.

But Sami Neilson bounced back after dropping the second set, dispatching her opponent 6-3 in the third and tying the team score at 3.

Friedrich feed off her teammates energy and withstood a few match points to overcome the deficit and take set two 7-5.

Friedrich was rolling from there and earned the individual victory and the team win with a 6-3 third set.

"We built confidence between points by cheering each other on," Sepulveda said. "That ended up leading to the first doubles win of the season".

Point Loma continues their opening week on the PLNU Tennis Courts Saturday morning when they host San Diego Christian at 10:00am.
