SAN DIEGO-The Point Loma Sea Lions (2-1) made it a sweet weekend when they added their second win of the opening week with a 6-1 victory over San Diego Christian College (0-1) at the PLNU tennis courts.
The Sea Lions jumped out to an early 1-0 lead following doubles, winning all three courts by a landslide. Sami Neilson and Angelique Friedrich finished first with a 6-2 win, the upperclassman setting the tone for the sunny Saturday afternoon. Faith Person and Arianna Audelo then added an impressive 6-1 win to secure the doubles point. Amanda Letzring and Thelma Sepulveda put the icing on the cake, snagging that third win.
Moving into singles matches, the Sea Lions were on point offensively as Audelo, Sepulveda and Letzring all had 6-0 shutout sets. A quick match today with all 6 courts finishing in two sets, Audelo finished first with a 6-3, 6-0 win, not long after Letzring added another point for Loma, smoking her opponent 6-0, 6-2. Point Loma suffered a loss on court 6 which brought the SDCC Hawks within reach, sitting one point behind the PLNU Sea Lions.
However, on Court 4 Neilson secured her match to ensure the Sea Lion victory.
Undefeated Friedrich continued her stellar performance, adding her third singles win of the week. The Sea Lions ran their lead to 5-1 over the Hawks before Sepulveda added in another point over her opponent to close the match at 6-1.
"The Portland State win yesterday gave us the energy we needed moving into the weekend," Neilson said. "It is encouraging to start the season off on such a high".
"We are looking forward to keeping the win streak alive in the Fresno matches." Friedrich added.
