SAN DIEGO-Just when it looked like the Point Loma Sea Lions (4-0 overall) might run out of their powerful punch, the offense flexed its collective muscle again to pull out sweep of the Cal State San Bernardino Yotes (0-4 overall) with wins of 12-4 and 7-3 Saturday afternoon at Carroll B. Land Stadium.
The home openers saw the Sea Lions be too welcoming to their visitors, as Point Loma trailed at the start of both ball games before showcasing the high-powered offense they displayed Friday night. But instead of the long ball, the Sea Lions strung together 22 hits and still may have left some on the table.
Point Loma's potent punch responded to San Bernardino's first lead of the series as the Yotes jumped out in front of PLNU starter
Jack Gonzales in the first inning.
Otto Kemp's solo homer led off the bottom of the 1
st.
Scott Anderson reached on a double down the left field line and came around to score on
Jake Entrekin's RBI single that tied the game.
Jack Gonzales threw up a zero in the top of the second against the Yotes and Point Loma's offense responded.
Adam Axtell and
J.J. Gerarden each singled to set up Anderson with two outs.
Anderson's bunt attempt was fielded by the Yotes' pitcher, but an errant throw down the right field line scored Axtell and kept the inning going.
That was long enough for
Baxter Halligan to blast a three-run homer toward the Pacific Ocean over the right-center field fence and give Point Loma a 6-2 lead after two.
CSUSB used a one-out triple in the third to setup a two-out single, and scratch across a run to make it 6-3 Point Loma heading into the bottom of the third.
Point Loma would get that run back and then some in the bottom of the frame capitalizing on a San Bernardino error for three runs.
The game would remain 9-3 until the 6
th when Halligan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home a run.
The Yotes got that run right back in the top of the 7
th.
But Point Loma pushed across a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning and then scored one more on a fielder's choice in the 8
th to solidify the series victory at 12-4.
Still, the margin could have been wider as PLNU left 16 runners on base in the first game of the day.
Cole Hillier tossed three innings of relief to earn the win.
The two teams bounced back after the 3 and a half hour game 1, to start game two a few minutes after 3:00 pm.
The Yotes jumped out against Point Loma starter
Nathan Garkow.
Point Loma was unusually quiet offensively for the first three innings and found themselves down 2-0 as CSUSB added one more run in the top of the fourth.
The Sea Lions would tie the game in the bottom of the inning when
Seth Ryberg doubled down the right field line to plate
Jakob Christian to get Point Loma on the board.
Hunter Otjen then singled in Ryberg to even the score.
Ryberg put Point Loma ahead in the bottom of the fifth, ripping a bases-loaded double down the line again, scoring Halligan and Anderson.
Otjen followed with a double to left that brought home
Adam Axtell and Ryberg. Otjen came around to score on a throwing error.
The Yotes got one run back in the top of the seventh, their third solo homer of the game but Zach Veen, who came on in the fifth, secured the win.
Point Loma finishes their first series of the year with some ridiculous numbers. The team is hitting .378 with a 1.151 OPS collectively. Point Loma racked up 54 hits in the series, 22 of which went for extra bases.
Scott Anderson finished the series going 10-17 (.588) with 8 runs scored to lead Point Loma. Ryberg's effective day pushes him to .471 on the year.
Otto Kemp is the only Sea Lion with multiple home runs. Six others have gone deep for Point Loma.
As good as the offense was in the series, the pitching more than held its own. Point Loma surrendered 11 runs in the four games as the Sea Lion pitchers struck out 42 batters in 32 innings and surrendered just 8 walks.
The Sea Lions staff allowed just 36 base runners in those 32 innings, holding CSUSB to a .228 average over the four-games.
Point Loma will have another four game series next week when they host Northwest Nazarene University, led by former PLNU Skipper Joe Schaeffer, over three days.
The series will open on Thursday with a 9 inning game beginning at 2:00pm. Friday's double-header will start at 11:00am and then the series will conclude Saturday with a 9-inning game that will start at 11:00am. Tickets are available at plnusealions.com.
