SAN DIEGO — Brock Mackenzie's 1,000th point milestone was just one of the many things that went right during the Point Loma Sea Lions (15-8 overall, 11-4 PacWest) 72-60 win over Dominican University Penguins (7-15 overall, 3-11 PacWest) Wednesday night inside Golden Gymnasium.
Mackenzie entered the night with 999 career points as a Sea Lion and Point Loma weathered a back-and-forth first half before riding the momentum to their sixth straight win of the season.
"It starts with the relationships of our guys," Point Loma Head Coach
Matt Logie said. "They love playing together. They care about one another and they don't care who gets the credit."
Point Loma exchanged 6-0 runs with the Dominican Penguins in the middle of the first half and traded leads 14 different times in the first half.
The Sea Lions received 11 points from
Kaden Anderson as the teams were mostly even in the first half until the Sea Lions were able to widen the margin, behind a
Brian Goracke three and
Hugh Baxter layup, to 37-33 at halftime.
Point Loma's lead hovered in single digits over the first five minutes of the second-half, but reigning PacWest Player of the Week
Ben Okhotin book-ended a Dominican layup with a pair of three's as the Sea Lion's lead grew to double-digits, forcing a quick timeout from the Penguins.
After exchanging the lead so many times in the first half, Point Loma never surrendered the advantage over the final 20 minutes, continuing to add three's from
Coby Barnes and Mackenzie.
Point Loma's stiff defense held Dominican to just 3-20 from deep for the game and just 1-10 in the final 20 minutes. Dominican shot just 10-29 from the field in the second half.
"Our energy level just increased." Logie said of the 2
nd half. "We were more aggressive, we had better ball pressure and we were able to get stops and get out in transition."
The Sea Lions had excellence balance as
Kaden Anderson finished tied for the game-high with 17 points and 10 rebounds while Mackenzie finished his milestone evening with 12. Barnes added a career high 11 and
Hugh Baxter chipped in with 11 as well.
"The ball movement has been good." Mackenzie said. "It's been good the past couple of games. We've been trusting each other and playing as a team. It's not a bad time to be clicking. We're just happy we're moving the ball and people are making big shots."
Point Loma aims to stretch the streak to 7 when they host Fresno Pacific Friday night at 8:00pm inside Golden Gymnasium.
