SAN DIEGO — The Point Loma Nazarene Sea Lions (13-8 overall, 8-6 PacWest) lost their momentum and their win-streak, falling to the Dominican University Penguins (13-9 overall, 10-5 PacWest) 68-59 in Wednesday night's game inside Golden Gymnasium.
Sydney Peterson eclipsed the 1,000th point milestone late in the 4th quarter sparking a PLNU run that momentarily brought the game into single digits. However that wasn't enough to turn the tide as Dominican was relentless from tip-off till the final seconds.
The Penguins came out with their high-pressure defense, forcing quick turnovers from Point Loma leading to a 14-5 deficit.
Point Loma managed to reel it in a bit and ended the quarter with a three from
Cara Liggins and a strong three-point play from
Alix Henderson. The Sea Lions cut the deficit at the end of the period from nine down to one before a late bucket from the Penguins ended the quarter with Dominican up 21-18.
Dominican kept the pressure on defense in the second quarter, forcing more PLNU turnovers.
Dominican built back their lead, with an 11-2 run at the end of the 2
nd quarter, including 3 three-pointers, to hold a 41-33 lead at the half.
Dominican's aggressive defense continued and the Penguins combined that with the best effort on the glass the Sea Lions have faced in the last ten games.
The Penguins lead swelled to as much as 23 as Point Loma turned the ball over 12 more times in the second half.
Point Loma dug into that deficit, pulling within single digits during Peterson's milestone moments but that was as close as it would get for PLNU.
Both teams shot under 40% from the field, however, Dominican found its cushion outside.
Point Loma made one less field goal, but four less three's.
It was also the first time in the last ten games that the Sea Lions were beat on the glass, as Dominican narrowly edged Point Loma 41-40 in rebounds.
Liggins was the only Sea Lion to reach double-digit points but six others connected on multiple field goals.
For Peterson, the milestone is a long time coming after having prolific scoring years in each of her first two season on campus before missing major parts of the last two while recovering from injury.
"To play all five years at Point Loma has been an honor," Peterson said of her milestone. "It's been a long journey. But it's been fun. Especially with my teammates and the new coaching staff. Just to make a little impact this year has been fun."
The loss puts an end to the Sea Lion's 5-game win-streak. Point Loma will aim to return to their winning ways Friday night inside Golden Gymnasium when they host Fresno Pacific at 6:00pm.
