SAN DIEGO– The Point Loma Sea Lions (9-5 overall) used a dominant single's performance to overcome the Bowling Green Falcons (3-6 overall) Thursday afternoon on the Point Loma Tennis Courts.
In doubles play, a few final shots made the difference as Point Loma found themselves nearly set point on every court. But a fast rally on court 2 resulted in the edge for BGU, taking the result of the first doubles pairing 4-6. Bowling Green soon clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 on court 1.
Faith Pearson and
Amanda Letzring were neck and neck with their opponents but fell 7-5.
The Falcons entered singles up 1-0 over the Sea Lions.
The Falcons held the momentum in the immediate start of singles. BGU grabbed their second point on court 2, earning a 2-0 lead.
It was then that Point Loma began its move.
Rachel Whittington's passionate play powered the Loma ladies onto the scoreboard as she knocked out her first singles win of the year 6-3, 6-1. It also put Point Loma on the board, although they trailed 2-1.
Still, the win served as a kick-starter as
Samantha Neilson slammed a volley over the net to win her first set 6-2. Neilson quickly took the match thanks to a 6-1 win in the second set to tie up the team score 2-2.
Thelma Sepulveda pushed Point Loma ahead for the first time in the afternoon as she held the lead the entirety of the second set before taking it 6-4. Sepulveda's win made it 3-2 Point Loma.
Arianna Audelo used the support from the home crowd and her teammates to claw back from a 2-4 deficit in the second set as she clinched the fourth point, and the win, for the Sea Lions. With impressive finesse, she found a way to cut off opponents' angles on the baseline and adapt to the windy conditions. Audelo won the match 7-5, 7-6 (7-3).
"Staying inside of the court gave me a huge advantage," reflected Audelo. "I would find a short ball and just put it away after, cutting off her angles."
Up 4-2, Letzring showcased her skill in a dramatic back and forth tie-breaker, sending a variety of shots flying towards the Falcon opponent. After taking the first set 6-3, Letzring added the final point of the day for the Sea Lions with a 7-6 win, taking the tiebreaker 7-4. That ended with the 5th and final point for Point Loma in the win over Bowling Green.
The Sea Lions will bounce right back to play at 11:00 am Friday morning welcoming Michigan Tech to the Point Loma Tennis Courts. The Sea Lions will end the weekend against PacWest opponent Holy Names on Saturday with another 11:00 am start at the PLNU Tennis Courts.
