PLNU CRUISES TO SWEEP OF HNU

SAN DIEGO– The Point Loma Sea Lions (10-5 overall) cruised through a 7-0 sweep over Holy Names Hawks (2-6 overall) Saturday morning on the Point Loma Tennis Courts.

The shorthanded Hawks played on just two of the doubles courts and four singles matches meaning Point Loma started up 2-0 (because of singles) and needed just one win out of two doubles pairings to go up 3-0 in the team score.

Angelique Friedrich and Samantha Neilson showcased their synergy on the court together as they towered over the Hawks 6-0 to seal the doubles point for the Sea Lions and push Point Loma up 3-0.

"They have been playing really well together this season, illustrating a great dynamic in doubles." Point Loma Head Coach Curt Wheeler said. "They have the ability to really understand when to be on the offensive. They are really aggressive in doubles play but also patient and set their partner up to form a great dynamic in doubles."

Faith Pearson was the first to notch a singles victory, quickly picking up the 6-0, 6-3 win on court 4and extending Point Loma's 4-0 lead, clinching the team win as well.

Arianna Audelo followed close behind as she put her strong technique on display in a two-set win 6-0, 6-2 to push the lead to 5-0.

Meanwhile, on court 3, Amanda Letzring carried the first set 6-3 before she dropped the second set 0-6. Letzring bounced back with strong conviction in the third set for a 10-5 win in the tiebreak.

With Point Loma up 6-0, Thelma Sepulveda was in the position to close out the sweep. Sepulveda was up early in set 1, with a 3-0 lead, before she was able to finish out her opponent 6-1, 6-4 to close out the match.

Except for Audelo, the other three singles players for Point Loma all played up at least one spot. Letzring extends her winning streak to six consecutive singles matches and is now 11-3 on the year. Pearson extended the next longest singles streak for PLNU, to three straight wins.

The Sea Lions will be back on the Point Loma Tennis Courts next Wednesday, March 16th to face Texas A&M Kingsville at 4:00 PM.
