PITCHING DECIDES SERIES OPENING SPLIT WITH HPU

SAN DIEGO-After exploding for 11 runs in a game one victory, the #4 Point Loma Sea Lions (18-2 overall, 4-2 PacWest) were finally quieted as they split a series-opening doubleheader with the Hawai'i Pacific Sharks (12-11 overall, 6-6 PacWest) Monday afternoon at Carroll B. Land Stadium.

After a complete exhibition that included pitching, defense, and offense in game one's 11-0 victory, Point Loma was shut out for the first time this season in a 2-0 ballgame in game two.

Baxter Halligan danced around trouble from a pesky HPU offense for six innings despite a few threats from the Sharks.

While the game was scoreless heading into the third inning, the Sea Lions offense erupted in the bottom of the inning. After J.J. Gerarden was hit by a pitch to start the inning, Otto Kemp opened the scoring with a deep drive over the centerfield fence to make it 2-0.

Scott Anderson backed it up with a double before Halligan belted a two-run homer of his own to double the lead at 4-0.

Easton Waterman was hit by a pitch and then Hunter Otjen delivered a two-out single into right field.

Michael Pineiro was the third batter of the inning to be hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Gerarden then was plunked for the 2nd time in the inning, forcing home a run.

HPU went to the bullpen, but Izayah Alvarez ripped a two-run single, and Kemp backed it up with another single to complete the 8-run inning.

Point Loma added two more in the bottom of the fourth with two outs. Jack Malone started the rally with a single and then stole second. Otjen doubled into the left-field corner to score Malone and then came around on Pineiro's line drive into right field.

The Sea Lions added their final run in the bottom of the fifth when Anderson ripped a line drive over the left-center field fence.

After Halligan's strong six innings, Connor Hill closed the door for Point Loma, tossing three scoreless innings of relief for his first collegiate save.

Despite the 11-0 final, HPU showed plenty of fight at the plate and scattered 9 baserunners against Point Loma.

The Sharks quickly gained the upper hand in game two when Braxton Wehrle's solo homer in the 2nd gave HPU its first lead of the series.

That was plenty for starter Max Beaulieu who stifled the PLNU offense.

The tall righty worked around four walks and surrendered just two hits, but relied on his defense to keep PLNU off the board.

Beaulieu then turned the ball over to Eddie Lee for the final three innings of shutout baseball.

Point Loma's best threat came in the 7th, but Lee induced an inning-ending double play. He retired the final six batters he faced to grab the save.

The series concludes on Tuesday with a doubleheader beginning at noon. The 1st game is scheduled for 9 innings, game two is scheduled for 7 innings.
