SAN DIEGO-Backed by a powerful start in doubles, the Point Loma Sea Lions (12-5 overall) raced to their 4
th consecutive victory with a 6-1 win over the Hawai'i Hilo Vulcans (2-8 overall) Friday evening at the PLNU Tennis Courts.
Rachel Whittington and
Arianna Audelo made quick work of the first doubles pairing, taking every game in a 6-0 victory.
Courts two and three were a little tighter, but
Samantha Neilson and
Angelique Friedrich clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory, rebounding after a series of long rallies.
Up 1-0 heading into singles, Friedrich continued her tidy play with an expedited 6-1, 6-1 victory on court 3. Friedrich utilized all aspects of her game, including a dominant serve, to improve PLNU's lead 2-0.
Neilson was not far behind her doubles partner, taking set one 6-3 and then cruising in the second set 6-1.
With Point Loma up 3-0, Audelo continued her impressive run, winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 to clinch the match for the Sea Lions.
Faith Pearson was not far behind with a 6-3, 6-2 win as Point Loma bumped the score to 5-0.
Hilo got its lone win in a 10-5 tiebreaker on court 4, but
Thelma Sepulveda won the marathon match on court 2, bouncing back after a 6-3 loss in set two. Sepulveda jumped in front during the tiebreak, taking the first three points, and maintained the lead throughout the set before wrapping up the evening with a 10-6 victory.
Point Loma has been busy over the last two weeks with 7 matches, but they went 5-2 over that period and have two more matches remaining in the homestand.
The Sea Lions will return to the PLNU Tennis Courts on Tuesday, March 22
nd at noon against Metro State of Denver.
