STRONG SINGLES PLAY LEADS TO WIN OVER METRO STATE

SAN DIEGO– The Point Loma Sea Lions (13-5 overall) dominated in singles play as they took down the Metropolitan State Denver Roadrunners (5-5 overall) 5-2 in a PacWest battle Tuesday on the PLNU Tennis Courts.

Despite injuries resulting in a lineup change, the Loma Ladies proved once again their comfort on the PLNU Tennis Courts, adding a 5th consecutive win to their homestand.

Metro State Denver took an early lead in doubles, securing the third court 6-1. The Roadrunners struggled to break Samantha Neilson's strong service as Angelique Friedrich fired back overhand shots near the net to take three consecutive points. The pair put Point Loma back in the race, securing court one 6-4.

Doubles' play came down to a close match on the 2nd court before the Roadrunner duo sealed the point for Metro State. Point Loma entered singles play down 1-0, but ready for revenge on their home courts.

Neilson stepped up in singles as she took the first set 6-3 for the Sea Lions. She continued to dominate in the 2nd set, winning 6-2 to take court 4 and tie the score 1-1 to MSU.

"Once I figured out my routine I was able to get comfortable and zone in on offense." reflected Neilson. "This win was really big and will motivate us to keep working hard".

Caddy corner to Neilson, on court 3, Amanda Letzring played a variety of shots from the baseline and net to pick up another point for Point Loma.

"As a team, we wiped the slate after doubles and entered into singles with a fresh mindset," said Letzring. "No matter what position we are in, I keep the energy up through consistency. I committed to my shots and I was aggressive today."

Friedrich carried confidence today as she picked up the third point for the Sea Lions in a 6-4, 6-2 dominant win on court 2.

This energy carried onto court 4, as Whittington tallied the clinching point for the 6-2, 6-2 win over her opponent.

Pearson fell 6-4 in set one but confidently clawed her way back to a win in 6-2, 6-3 sets.

"The team responded to the doubles challenge well," said Point Loma head coach Curt Wheeler. "They came out fired up and focused in singles play and got after it in every position."

The Sea Lions are back at home Saturday, March 26th to host Stanislaus State. The first serve is scheduled for 11:00 am at the Point Loma Tennis Courts. Stay in the loop of Sea Lion athletics by visiting plnusealions.com.
