SEA LIONS POWER PAST STANISLAUS STATE

SAN DIEGO– The Point Loma Sea Lions (14-5 overall) flexed their power while dominating the Stanislaus State Warriors (4-6 overall) 7-0 in a Saturday morning sweep on the PLNU Tennis Courts.

Stanislaus State came out swinging aggressively as there was a tight race on each court in doubles play. The court 1 pairing led the way for the Sea Lions as Samantha Neilson and Angelique Friedrich added a sixth victory to their doubles win streak, 7-5 over the Warriors.

"The chemistry between Neilson and Friedrich is great." said Head Coach Curt Wheeler "They have an understanding of how to set their partner up and bring out the best tennis in one another."

On court 3, Amanda Letzring and Thelma Sepulveda concluded 6-4 over opponents to seal the doubles point. PLNU led 1-0 over Stan St. as they entered singles play.

"Every court was a battle," said Head Coach Curt Wheeler. "The girls played confident and decisive tennis in those close moments to close the difference in doubles."The Point Loma women's tennis team exerted dominance over the home courts as they picked up the first set on all six singles courts.

Pearson put her stellar play on display as she tallied her 7th consecutive singles victory, overtaking Sylvanna Talamantes in rapid 6-0, 6-0 succession.

"Faith has a great balance of patience but also utilizes her offensive abilities to finish points," said Coach Wheeler  "Her combination of consistency, variety, and ability to finish at the net creates a difficult matchup for her opponents"

Talamantes got a few touches on her shots but sent the majority out of bounds as Pearson confidently executed her offensive strategies.

"Staying patient worked in my favor today," reflected Pearson. "We recently worked on a delayed come-in strategy at practice that I finished with a swing volley. I used it today and it worked well."

On court 4, Neilson took control early in the first set, barely letting her opponent breathe as she rapidly sent forehands to the baseline. Neilson added the second singles point for PLNU in two 6-1 sets.

Up 3-0, Rachel Whittington found a rhythm in an aggressive service run, taking court 6 by scores of 6-2, 6-1 as she clinched the match for the Sea Lions which put PLNU up 4-0.

Friedrich tallied the 5th point for the Sea Lions, clutching 6-3, 6-2 wins on court 2.

Amanda Leztring utilized her dynamic spin move on court 3 as she took her opponent in 6-2, 6-4 sets.

Thelma Sepulveda's consistent shots played in her favor on court 1 in a tie break 10-8 third set. Sepulveda's victory on court 1 was the icing on the cake as PLNU swept Stanislaus State 7-0.

The Sea Lions travel to Azusa Pacific for a Pac-West rematch on April 2nd at 11:00 am. For the latest PLNU Athletic updates, visit plnusealions.com
