ALAMEDA, Calif.-A pair of tight games swung opposite directions thanks to some late offense as the #3 Point Loma Sea Lions (23-3 overall, 9-3 PacWest) secured the series victory over the Holy Names Hawks (13-20 overall, 6-14 PacWest) Saturday afternoon at the College of Alameda Baseball Field.
Holy Names scratched across a run in the bottom of the ninth to knock down Point Loma 5-4 in the first game of Saturday's double-header. Point Loma bounced right back with a three-run first inning but used a run in the 4
th and a run in the 7
th to hold off the Hawks 5-3 to take the series from Holy Names.
Point Loma took the first lead in game one, as
Otto Kemp's leadoff homer put the Sea Lions out in front 1-0.
PLNU starter
Nathan Garkow kept it that way until the fourth when Holy Names capitalized on the Sea Lion's lone error, delivering a two-out double to tie the game.
The game remained tied into the 7
th inning when
Izayah Alvarez roped a single to bring in
Seth Ryberg and reset PLNU's one-run lead to 2-1.
But Holy Names responded against the Sea Lions bullpen, tying the game on an RBI groundout before a two-run triple gave the Hawks their first lead of the series at 4-2.
It was Point Loma's turn to respond in the top of the 8
th, as
Baxter Halligan walked and moved to third on
Jakob Christian's double into centerfield. Halligan scored on a passed ball, which moved Christian in position to score on
Hunter Otjen's sacrifice fly, tying the game at 4-4.
With the game still tied, the Sea Lions loaded the bases in the ninth but a double play ended the threat and gave Holy Names the chance for a walk-off.
After a hit batter and a walk, an infield hit brought home the deciding run from 2
nd for the Hawks, handing a 5-4 loss to the Sea Lions.
Point Loma's offense wasted little time in game two. As
Scott Anderson's solo homer in the top of the 1
st immediately sparked the bats.
Three batters later, Christian belted a two-run homer and Point Loma handed starter
Jack Gonzales a 3-0 lead before he stepped foot on the mound.
The southpaw stymied the Hawks over the first two innings, but a two-run double in the bottom of the third pulled Holy Names within a run at 3-2.
Point Loma handed Gonzales another run of support in the top of the 4
th as
Adam Axtell and
Izayah Alvarez cranked back-to-back triples to push the lead back to 4-2.
Holy Names built a dangerous rally in the bottom of the 5
th, as they strung together four straight singles to start the inning, plating a run. But the fourth single, which drove in the run, was laced into right field and Otjen fired home a throw to cut down the tying run at the plate for the first out of the inning.
Gonzales locked in, striking out the next batter and inducing an inning-ending ground ball to preserve the lead at 4-3.
Gonzales would retire the final six batters he faced to seal the win, with Kemp's leadoff double setting up PLNU's final run in the top of the 7
th finalizing the score at 5-3.
Point Loma wins its 9
th consecutive series to open the season and picks up its first four-game road series victory in as many tries.
Next up for the #3, Sea Lions is a return to Carroll B. Land Stadium for a home and home non-conference series against the Biola Eagles. PLNU will host the first two games of the series on Friday, April 1
st beginning at Noon. The Sea Lions will make the return trip on Saturday, April 2
nd to La Mirada to complete the 4-game non-conference series.
