SAN DIEGO-A pair of dominant starts led to a pair of shutouts as the Point Loma Sea Lions (25-3 overall, 9-3 PacWest) swept a non-conference doubleheader from the Biola Eagles (12-14 overall, 8-4 PacWest) 7-0 and 9-0 Friday afternoon at Carroll B. Land Stadium.
Baxter Halligan set a new career-high with 13 strikeouts as he baffled Biola's bats for 7 scoreless innings in PLNU's 7-0 victory in the 9-inning game 1.
Dylan Miller backed up the performance with an 8 strikeout, 6 inning gem, as Point Loma ran away 9-0 thanks to two big innings in the 7-inning game 2.
Halligan set the tone from the beginning by striking out the side in the 1
st inning.
In the bottom of the first,
Otto Kemp drew a leadoff walk before
Scott Anderson laced a homer off the netting beyond the right-field fence.
Armed with a 2-0 lead, Halligan cruised through the next two innings as well. The southpaw struck out the side again in the 2
nd and started the 3
rd with his 7
th consecutive strikeout to start the game. Jorge Lucero grounded out to Kemp for the first ball put into play against Halligan, 8 batters into the game.
Halligan locked in again, striking out Brendan Bell to end the inning.
Point Loma could not add to the lead and the score remained 2-0 into the 4
th when Biola finally built a rally.
Tyler Baca's infield single was the first hit of the game, although
Adam Axtell's diving stop and throw nearly robbed the speedy outfielder.
Halligan struck out the next batter before issuing a walk. With two on and one out in the 4
th, Halligan tied his career-high for strikeouts in a single game, striking out his 10
th batter on the day for the second out of the inning. After one more out, Halligan set a new mark, getting his 11
th strikeout to end the inning.
The PLNU offense responded with a run in the bottom of the inning as
Hunter Otjen and
Izayah Alvarez both singled. Axtell moved both runners up with a groundout to the right side of the infield and a wild pitch brought home Otjen to extend the lead to 3-0.
Halligan got a reprieve in the fifth, using just 4 pitches to get three outs and send the PLNU offense right back to the plate.
The game remained 3-0 into the bottom of the 6
th when Point Loma capitalized on Biola's wildness.
Jakob Christian was hit by a pitch to start the inning and moved to 2
nd on Otjen's single. After Biola went to the bullpen, a walk and another hit batter brought Christian in to score.
Jack Malone followed that up by muscling a single into right field, scoring Otjen and stretching Point Loma's lead to five.
After adding one strikeout in the 6
th, Halligan tacked on his final strikeout in the 7
th, surrendered one final hit before inducing a groundout to Kemp at third, and completed his most dominating outing of the season.
Otjen took to the hill and worked a clean 8
th inning before the Sea Lions added two more runs in the bottom half of the inning. Anderson added an RBI single and
Seth Ryberg delivered an RBI groundout stretching the lead to 7-0.
Otjen worked through a sticky situation in the ninth, as Biola loaded with bases with two outs, preserving the shutout for the Sea Lions with a 7-0 win.
Game 2 followed a similar formula as Miller breezed through the 1
st inning with a pair of strikeouts.
But Point Loma failed to score in the first inning against Biola starter Jake Anderson.
Miller added two more strikeouts in the 2
nd as he retired Biola in order again.
Anderson matched the zero, despite PLNU loading the bases with a two-out rally.
Miller surrendered his first hit after retiring the first batter in the 3
rd but added another pair of strikeouts to get through the inning. Miller's six strikeouts over the first three sparked the Point Loma dugout and the Sea Lion's offense would answer.
Scott Anderson drew a walk to start the bottom of the third and moved to 2
nd when Halligan was hit by a pitch. Christian delivered the big hit, an RBI single to score Anderson and put Point Loma on the board.
Biola would go to the bullpen, but a pair of wild pitches allowed both Halligan and Christian to score. More Biola wildness led to
Adam Axtell walking, moving to 2
nd when
Jake Entrekin was hit by a pitch and then scoring on Malone's sacrifice fly.
The 4-run inning was more than enough for Miller, who worked around an error in the top of the fourth by inducing a pair of flyouts. Miller tacked on two strikeouts across the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings and held Biola's offense quiet for a total of six scoreless innings.
The Sea Lions broke out in the bottom of the sixth, immediately loading the bases at the start of the inning with singles by Malone and Alvarez and with a walk to Kemp.
Scott Anderson completed his stellar day with a two-run double down the right-field line. After Halligan was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Christian added to his stellar performance as well, roping a two-run double into the left-field corner. Halligan would come around to score on Otjen's sacrifice fly to make it a 5-run inning and a 9-0 Point Loma lead.
Jonathan Kozasky pitched a scoreless ninth to close out Point Loma's 8
th shutout of the year.
Anderson finished the doubleheader 4-8 with 5 RBI and Christian added to his hot hitting with a 4-7 day while driving in 3 runs.
While the games are non-conference, the Sea Lions run their record in games outside of the PacWest to 16-0. Their final non-conference games of the season are Saturday in La Mirada.
Point Loma kicks off an 8-game road trip on Saturday with the return trip to the Eagles Diamond to finish the non-conference series against Biola. The doubleheader begins at noon in La Mirada.
