SAN DIEGO– After staking the first point of the match in doubles, the Point Loma Sea Lions (8-5 overall) fell 4-3 to the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (6-3 overall) Tuesday morning on the PLNU Tennis Courts.
The PacWest rematch flipped the score of the 4-3 win the Sea Lions earned against the Sunbirds in February.
The Sea Lions exuded cohesive confidence on the doubles court from the start.
Angelique Friedrich beat the Sunbirds to the net on nearly every point as she and
Samantha Neilson snagged a 6-0 victory. The win marks Neilson and Friedrich's third doubles win in a row, and improves their doubles record to 3-0 in the 2
nd pairing.
Arianna Audelo's powerful serve paired with
Rachel Whittington's high energy at the net to seal the doubles point with a commanding 6-0 set for the Sea Lions.
The tides turned in singles play as the Sunbirds took control in early sets. Fresno Pacific took wins on courts 2 and 4.
Faith Pearson held on to a hot 3-0 start before winning 6-4, 6-1 to add a point for the Sea Lions.
Amanda Letzring continued her impressive run and added a 6-4, 6-4 victory to her five-game singles win streak.
Audelo found herself in an extremely close match, strategically placing each ball and attempting to catch her opponent on her heels. After multiple breakpoint opportunities and lead switches, FPU scraped out 8-4 final tiebreak set.
Court 3 was the last match to close out as
Thelma Sepulveda hit sneaky shots to the back of the court for FPU to chase after. Despite the effort, FPU took the match 6-4, 6-4 to earn the clinching point.
"We performed great in doubles and set a great tone," Point Loma Head Coach
Curt Wheeler said. "You have to credit Fresno because they came out ready to battle in singles on every court and played really. Well. We were able to fight and battle back on a few courts. We almost came back in a few matches that easily could have gone our way but didn't."
"We will learn from it," Wheeler continued. "Our team needs to take things that they did well along with things they need to do a bit better and take those into the matches coming forward. We have bounced back from losses before and I am confident the girls are going to use those things to learn from and continue to improve"
The Sea Lions will attempt to bounce back at home this Thursday at 3:00 pm against Bowling Green University on the PLNU Tennis Courts.
