IRVINE, Calif.-Using contributions from every team member, the Point Loma Sea Lions (17-6 overall) rolled to a 6-1 victory over the Concordia Eagles (8-13 overall) Tuesday afternoon at the CUI Tennis Courts.
Point Loma earned doubles victories in two of the three matches and won five of the six singles pairings to stomp to their third straight victory and 9
th win out of their last 10.
The Sea Lions quickly gained the upper hand in doubles behind the pairing of
Faith Pearson and
Rachel Whittington who earned a 6-2 win.
After Concordia evened the doubles score behind a 6-3 victory on Court No. 1, the veteran pairing of
Samantha Neilson and
Angelique Friedrich clinched the point, and their 9
th straight doubles win, behind a 6-4 match.
Up 1-0, the Sea Lions doubled the advantage as
Arianna Audelo delivered her most dominating performance of her young career and only lost one game the entire match in a 6-1, 6-0 win. It's the 2
nd time this season that Audelo has only lost a single game while also being the 2
nd time that she topped Concordia's Tiffany Carrillo this season. It also assures Audelo, now with a record of 12-9, of an above .500 record in singles despite playing a daunting schedule as a freshman, exclusively playing in the 1
st position all season long.
Point Loma's 2-0 lead was quickly cut in half behind CUI's victory on Court No. 3 in straight sets.
However, the Sea Lions' response was thorough beginning with
Thelma Sepulveda gutting out a pair of 7-5 sets in straight succession to push Point Loma to the cusp of a clinch.
That clinching point came quickly as
Faith Pearson only dropped two games in a 6-0, 6-2 win for her third straight victory.
Samantha Neilson made quick work of her opposition on Court No. 5, rolling to victory 6-2, 6-2 in straight sets.
Amanda Letzring was the last one going, withstanding attempted revenge from Kimia Rahmani 6-7 (7-9), 6-3, 6-5, while extending her winning streak to three matches.
It was another complete team effort for Point Loma, who saw every team member pick up a win in either singles or doubles with Neilson and Pearson being the lone Sea Lions to win in both on Tuesday.
Point Loma will look to finish the regular season with the same winning mindset as they head to Cal State Los Angeles on Friday for their final tune-up before the PacWest Championships.
