SURPRISE, Ariz.-Down 1-0 after doubles, the Point Loma Sea Lions rattled off four consecutive singles victories to defeat the Biola Eagles for 5
th place and a 2-1 record at the PacWest Championships at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Club.
It's the 2
nd time Point Loma has knocked off Biola this year after an early-season setback in La Mirada.
This time, on a neutral court, Point Loma had to rally from a point behind after a rare doubles loss. Despite
Rachel Whittington and
Faith Pearson grabbing a 6-1 on Court No. 3, Biola wrapped up wins on the other two courts to put the Sea Lions at a deficit.
But Point Loma responded with authority as
Amanda Letzring improved to 3-0 against the Eagles, dispatching Lily McNeil 6-4, 6-4 in just 74 minutes.
The team score was tied at one for all of two minutes as
Arianna Audelo delivered a dominant 6-1, 6-3 win over Colbeyshae Emery to give Point Loma the 2-1 lead.
Just three minutes later,
Faith Pearson wrapped up her 6-1, 6-4 win pushing Point Loma to the clinching point.
That came just eight minutes later as
Thelma Sepulveda cruised in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 to give PLNU the 4-1 win.
Point Loma's other two single players were fairing just fine when their matches were halted, as
Samantha Neilson was up a set and leading in the second set, 6-2, 4-3 when it was deemed incomplete.
Angelique Friedrich was heading into the third set but had jumped out to an early lead behind a 6-3 win in the first set.
Point Loma will now await word on what their victory does to the region playoff picture. The Sea Lions came away from the PacWest Championships with a pair of momentum-building wins over Hilo and Biola.
