SAN DIEGO-Five run frames carried the Point Loma Sea Lions (38-6 overall, 20-6 PacWest) to a doubleheader sweep of the Concordia Eagles (21-22-1 overall, 14-12 PacWest) Thursday afternoon for Senior Day at Carroll B. Land Stadium.
Senior Jason Dumont drove in five runs and PLNU put up their 5-spot in the 5
th inning of Game 1 to overcome a three-run deficit on their way to an 11-7 victory.
Otto Kemp's grand slam in the 2
nd inning of game two capped a five-run inning, and Point Loma withstood Concordia's rally to complete the sweep 7-5.
One of the most offensive days of the year at America's Most Scenic Ballpark started fairly quietly.
Concordia began their two-out rally in the first after Michael Dixon's double down the left-field line was cashed in by Richard Castro's RBI single.
Point Loma finally tied the game in the bottom of the third as Dumont's first homer as a Sea Lion, coming in his final regular-season home game, raced out over the right-field fence.
Concordia immediately countered in the top of the fourth on Alex Moreno's RBI double into the right center field gap. Moreno and Calvin Schoenbaum each scored on Will Bonn's two-run single, putting PLNU at a 4-1 deficit.
That's when Dumont sparked the comeback, delivering Point Loma's answer in the bottom of the fourth in the form of a two-run single through the right side and pulling PLNU within a run.
That's when Point Loma's offense found their five-run inning as Concordia's pitching lost control. Kemp walked to start the inning and
Jakob Christian delivered one of two singles in the inning. After a walk to Halligan,
Scott Anderson singled home Kemp, tying the game at four.
Concordia went to the bullpen with the bases loaded, but all three inherited runners scored as Point Loma used a sac fly, a hit batter, two RBI walks and an error to plate four more runs in the inning and take an 8-4 lead.
Point Loma added two more in the sixth, on walks as well, as Waterman and Dumont both forced home runs and Point Loma extended its advantage to 10-4.
But Concordia made it uncomfortable in the 7
th as Richard Castro doubled home a pair of runs and Jackson Collins singled him home pulling the Eagles within three.
Christian ripped a homer in the bottom of the inning that seemed to swing the momentum back into PLNU's favor.
For as offensive game as it was,
Baxter Halligan's 5 innings held up for his 10
th win of the year as he continued to rack up strikeouts, finishing with 7 in his final regular-season home game.
Zach Veen worked a scoreless sixth and
Cole Hillier closed out the win with two scoreless innings of relief for his 10
th save of the season.
The Sea Lions picked up right where they left off in game two of the doubleheader. After their 11 run game one, Point Loma jumped all over Concordia's Riley O'Sullivan for five runs in the second inning.
Â
The first six knocks from PLNU were hard-hit ground balls that found gaps in Concordia's infield. Kemp broke that streak by sending a towering shot over the wall in right field for his third grand slam of the year.Â
Â
After a clean first two innings from
Dylan Miller, the quick-working righty gave up a walk and double to begin the top of the third. Despite being ia n prime position to get back in the game, the Eagles only came out of the third with one run.
Â
With PLNU up 5-1, O'Sullivan put the rough second inning behind him and Concordia, managing to silence the Point Loma bats for the next four innings. His efforts on the mound allowed his offense to work their way back into the game.
Â
Miller went another strong pair of innings, but Concordia began to rally back into the ballgame in the sixth. Castro followed a leadoff single from Michael Dixon with a two-run home run, and the Eagles had cut PLNU's lead in half at 5-3.
Â
With a runner on in the inning, Collins sent another ball to deep center field and it appeared as if Concordia had stormed all the way back after being down four. However,
Jack Malone leaped above the wall in straight away center, crashing into the wall and securing the catch that preserved the Point Loma lead.
Â
The Sea Lions surrendered one more run in the top of the sixth, keeping things close heading into the final three innings of the doubleheader.
Hunter Otjen took over on the mound, and Schonebaum greeted him with a first-pitch home run to tie the game.
Â
With the game evened up at five runs apiece, Point Loma used the seven-inning stretch to recollect themselves. Once again, PLNU benefitted from Concordia's wildness as Kemp drew a walk to start the inning. With Kemp on 2
nd after Otjen's sacrifice bunt, PLNU's go-ahead hit came when
Baxter Halligan dropped a bloop single in between three fielders in shallow left field to plate the go-ahead run.
Â
Malone continued to make noise late in the game by giving PLNU some much-needed insurance with a solo home run in the eighth inning. His solo shot chased O'Sullivan from the game, and put Point Loma in a more comfortable position heading into the ninth up 7-5.
Â
Point Loma went back to its closer who had just converted the save in game one. Hillier made quick work of the Concordia batters in the ninth and collected his eleventh save of the year.
Â
The Sea Lions maintain a half game lead in the PacWest heading into their series finale with Concordia but the wins on Thursday secured the season series victory over the Eagles, as Point Loma is now 6-0 against CUI between non-conference and PacWest contests.
Â
The Sea Lions will wrap up their regular-season games on the road, meeting Concordia for two games Friday and then traveling to Fresno Pacific in early May.
