IRVINE, Calif.-The Point Loma Sea Lions (39-7 overall, 21-7 PacWest) rode behind
Jack Gonzales' 15 strikeout, no-hitter to finish off the season series victory over the Concordia Eagles (22-23-1 overall 15-13 PacWest) with a doubleheader split at Concordia Friday night.
Gonzales delivered a masterful, strikeout-laden performance leading PLNU to a bounce-back 5-0 win after falling 6-4 in the earlier game.
A day after benefitting from a pair of five-run frames at home, Point Loma was on the wrong end of a five-run sixth inning that was the difference in game one.
The Sea Lions took the lead in the top of the 6
th when
Easton Waterman broke a scoreless tie with an RBI single.
After
Nathan Garkow stifled Concordia for five scoreless innings, the Eagles broke through at the start of their sixth, putting three runs on the PLNU starter and forcing him from the game.
They added two more runs in the inning and benefitted from a slew of uncharacteristic walks issues by Point Loma pitching.
The Sea Lions recovered three of those runs in the seventh with
Otto Kemp sparking the rally with a single. He scored on
Jakob Christian's double with
Scott Anderson tacking on an RBI single and Waterman forcing home a run on an HBP.
Down 5-4, Point Loma surrendered an insurance run to Concordia in the bottom of the 7
th, after three walks set up a sacrifice fly.
With the score 6-4 in favor of Concordia, Point Loma had the tying run at the plate in the eighth and the winning run at the plate in the ninth but couldn't covert in their first loss of the series.
Point Loma responded in game two, as the series' theme of free passes showed up again.
After a pair of scoreless innings, the Sea Lions scored the first two runs of the game on back-to-back walks, taking a 2-0 lead in the third.
On the flip side, PLNU starter
Jack Gonzales was lights out. He struck out five of the first six batters he faced and didn't allow a baserunner until a one-out walk to Dante Catalino in the bottom of the third.
Jake Entrekin's leadoff double in the fourth sparked a two-run inning as
Izayah Alvarez played him with a single and later scored on
Hunter Otjen's sacrifice fly.
Gonzales ran his strikeout total up to eight, with a pair of punchouts in the bottom of the 4
th, and maintained the PLNU at 4-0 after four innings.
The Sea Lions added their final run of the game, fittingly, on a bases-loaded walk to Alvarez to make it 5-0.
That was already excess of what Gonzales needed Friday night as the Southpaw hit another level over the next three innings, including two different spans of five consecutive strikeouts.
The last of those streaks, he took into the seventh getting a pair of strikeouts before inducing a game-ending fly-out to complete an incredible no-hitter.
Gonzales tops his previous career-high of nine strikeouts set against Azusa Pacific earlier this season. Prior to coming to PLNU this year, Gonzales had established himself as an incredible crafty lefty, never exceeding more than 6 strikeouts in a game.
The performance also reminds PLNU fans of
Dylan Miller's no-hitter against this same Concordia team on March 5
th at Carroll B. Land Stadium in which the righty struck out 13 in seven innings.
Point Loma takes the season series from Concordia with seven wins to just one loss.
The Sea Lions will wrap up the regular season next week in Fresno, taking on the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds for a four-game series.
