Box Score (SAN DIEGO) PLNU Men's Tennis hit the ground running in 2023 with a 4-3 exhibition win over NCAA Division I Nevada on Friday morning.
Â
"The men's team did a tremendous job of competing at a high level today against a really tough UNR team," Head Coach
Curt Wheeler said. "I was happy with their focus on controlling the parts of the match that they had control over."
Â
The exhibition was originally scheduled to take place on Saturday but with rain in the forecast for this weekend, the match was moved to Friday.
Â
Â
Alexander Leischner (3-6, 6-3, 7-6),
Tyler Davis (7-5, 6-2) and
Fabian Penzkofer (7-6, 6-2) picked up singles wins at numbers one, two and three respectively.
Â
That came after PLNU captured the doubles point by winning two out of the three doubles matches. Leischner and Davis won at number one doubles (6-4), while Penzkofer teamed up with
Nabeel Khan to claim victory at number two doubles (7-6).
Â
The group has one more home exhibition match on Jan. 19 against another Division I opponent, San Francisco, before playing its official season opener on Feb. 4 against Westmont.
Â
"There are still things to work on before the season begins, but this was a great start to the spring 2023 semester for the men's team," Wheeler said.
