(HILO, Hawaii) No. 21 PLNU Men's Basketball is the lone remaining unbeaten team in PacWest play after Point Loma defeated Hawaii Hilo on Tuesday night, 83-73.
Â
"I'm really proud of our guys' effort tonight," Head Coach
Matt Logie said. "They hung together tonight against a very talented team in a tough place to win."
Â
PLNU, who moved up to No. 21 in the latest D2SIDA Media Poll, had its six-game winning streak to its conference schedule put to the test by Hilo, who had won each of its first four PacWest contests.
Â
Not much separated the two sides in a game that featured 10 ties and 14 lead changes and was tied at the half, 37-37.
Â
The score then primarily remained a one-possession game until late in the second half, when
Kaden Anderson's free throw with four minutes to play put the Sea Lions up by four.
Â
"I'm really proud of our guys' attitudes in the midst of adversity and the way they hung together," Logie said.
Â
Logie credited his team's defense in the second half for slowing down a potent Vulcan offense, holding it to 0-for-8 from behind the arc after halftime.
Â
"In the second half, our defense was able to create some deflections and get some stops when we really needed them against a team that was averaging 94 points in its last four games," Logie said.
Â
PLNU won the turnover battle, converting that into a 16-8 advantage in points off turnovers.
Â
Kaden Anderson eclipsed 20 points for the fifth-straight game, leading all scorers with 26 points, while adding 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season.
Â
Luke Haupt was next with 16 points, while
Jake Lifgren (13 points) and
Brian Goracke (11 points, seven rebounds) joined them in double-digit scoring.
Shamrock Campbell (nine points) nearly made it five Sea Lions in double figures.
Â
"Kaden and Luke were great leaders tonight on both sides of the ball," Logie said. "Shamrock and Jake really stepped up and hit some big shots when we needed them."
Â
Point Loma (12-3 overall, 7-0 PacWest) continues its road trip on Thursday against Hawaii Pacific. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. PST / 6:30 p.m. HST.
