(FRESNO, Calif.) PLNU Women's Cross Country raced to a fourth-place finish at the PacWest Championships on Saturday in Fresno, led by All-Conference performances from
Aubrie Nex and
Maddie Reeves at Woodward Park.
Â
"We had a good race," Head Coach
Landon Bright said. "Going into it we wanted to be top-four, so the ladies were able to accomplish that. I think for the most part they all wanted to race a little better but them not feeling 100% and still having solid races is a pretty good sign."
Â
Â
Nex, who has battled an injury all season, garnered All-PacWest honors for the third-straight year with a 6K time of 21:43.1. Her 11th place finish put her on the All-Conference Second Team, while Reeves received Third Team recognition with her 18th place finish (22:14.8).
Â
"They weren't feeling their best after the first mile so for them to hang in there and still have really good races while not feeling their best, I thought was really good," Bright said. "Aubrie knows she can go faster if she feels a little better but she did what she needed to do.
Â
"Reeves keeps moving up and has gained a lot of confidence in learning how to race at the collegiate level. That's really encouraging to see."
Â
Â
Ryley Burns finished 24th for the second-straight year at the conference meet, just missing out on All-PacWest honors by three spots with a time of 22:27.0.
Â
"For Aubrie and Ryley it was pretty much their second race of the season, so it was a good effort," Bright said about Nex and Burns, who both PR'd by at least 12 seconds. "Hopefully they can get healthier in the next two weeks leading into the regional meet."
Â
Elizabeth Satterlee (28th – 22:47.2) and
Eliana Perks (43rd – 23:51.1) rounded out PLNU's scoring five for a team total of 115 points, as the Sea Lions improved upon last year's fifth-place finish at the conference meet.
Â
"We've been working on the mental side quite a bit," Bright said. "Wanting them to really trust themselves and not be scared, how to be up there and know that they can race with the vast majority of athletes.
Â
"I think that confidence is coming and they were a lot more aggressive in the first mile throughout the season. For us we've wanted to get out and keep an eye on the teams we wanted to beat and they were able to do that."
Â
Â
Point Loma now sets its sights on the NCAA West Regional in Monmouth, Oregon on Nov. 4, PLNU finished in 18th place at last season's regionals.
Â
"I'm pretty happy with it overall," Bright said. "Now we get to move on to the regional meet and I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do the next couple of weeks."
