(POMONA, Calif.) PLNU Women's Basketball's depth was on display Saturday night against Cal Poly Pomona, with the Sea Lions' bench scoring 49 points, but it wasn't enough in the end as the Broncos prevailed 75-66.
Shayla O'Neil led the team with 18 points, while
Hannah Golan (14 points) and
Annika Thayer (12 points, six rebounds) also scored in double figures.
Golan has scored double-digit points in each of the first two games of her college career after scoring 10 in a win over No. 22 Cal State San Marcos on Friday, including the game-winning basket with under a minute remaining.
Ellie Turk's 3-pointer early in the first quarter gave Point Loma a 5-2 lead against Cal Poly Pomona, but that advantage only lasted a couple minutes as the home side then took control of the game.
CPP took a 12-point lead into halftime and stretched that to as many as 17 early in the fourth quarter, before PLNU fought back to get to within single digits by the end.
The Broncos made four more 3-pointers than the Sea Lions, shooting at a 42.3% clip from behind the arc compared to PLNU's 30.4%, which more than accounted for the final margin between the two teams.
Point Loma (1-1 overall) will now travel to Colorado for two games this week, as the Sea Lions' first six games of the season are away from home.
PLNU will play at UCCS in Colorado Springs on Thursday (6 p.m. PT / 7 p.m. MT) before playing Regis in Denver on Saturday (2:30 p.m. PT / 3:30 p.m. CT).
