PLNU ERUPTS FOR 35 RUNS IN DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP OF CSUMB

(SEASIDE, Calif.) Fourth-ranked PLNU Baseball made a massive statement on Friday, scoring 35 runs and hitting eight homers in a doubleheader sweep of No. 25 Cal State Monterey Bay, winning by scores of 22-6 and 13-3.

In each game, the Sea Lions turned close contests into blowouts with a flurry of runs in the late innings.

In game one, Point Loma led 6-4 after six before scoring 16 runs across the final three innings – five in the seventh, five in the eighth and six in the ninth.

Jakob Christian (3-for-6, 3 R, 2 RBI) and Hunter Otjen (3-for-7, 3 R, 6 RBI) each homered twice in the first game, from the sixth inning on, with Jack Malone (3-for-5, 2 R, 4 RBI) adding a three-run dinger in the ninth.

Then in game two, PLNU led 5-3 going into the seventh and final inning before erupting for eight runs, six of which came from a pair of three-run homers from Jake Entrekin and Christian.

Cole Hillier was in line for a two-inning save in the second game, pitching a scoreless bottom of the sixth. That was before the Sea Lions' eight runs put the visitors up by double digits, as Hillier gave way to Matthew Schlesener to finish out the game.

Scott Anderson (7-for-11, 5 R, 2B, HR, 4 RBI) and Entrekin (6-for-8, 4 R, 2B, HR, 4 RBI) both had massive days at the plate with at least three hits in each game.

Troy Wentworth earned the win in game one, pitching 3.1 shutout innings in relief with five strikeouts. Kaden Lewis was awarded the victory in the second game, pitching five innings and giving up two earned runs while striking out five.

Point Loma (6-1 overall) will face off with Cal State Monterey Bay, the preseason favorite to win the CCAA, in another doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 11 a.m.
