PLNU BEATS NAVY TO REACH DOUBLE-DIGIT WINS

(SAN DIEGO) PLNU Men's Tennis wore green in its St. Patrick's Day matchup with Navy, but the Sea Lions didn't need the luck of the Irish as they rolled to a dominant 7-0 win over the Midshipmen.

"That was impressive by the guys today," Head Coach Curt Wheeler said. "One thing we talk about a lot is starting matches well, in doubles and singles, with a really high level of focus and intensity where you're bringing your best tennis from the first ball.

"That's something that showed today with the guys not dropping a single set in singles. They were focused on every point, in every game and in every set."

Point Loma, who improved to 10-1 overall on the season, won two out of three doubles matches before sweeping all six singles matchups.

PLNU's No. 1 duo of Tyler Davis and Alexander Leischner had their 10-match doubles unbeaten streak to start the season ended, but the Sea Lions previously won at No. 2 and 3 to take the doubles point.

Alejandro Castaneda and Nabeel Khan were victorious by a 6-1 margin at No. 3 before Fabian Penzkofer and Elias Weeks combined to win 6-2 at No. 2 to give the Sea Lions a 1-0 match lead.

Leischner then got PLNU off and running in singles with his 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1. The ITA West Regional singles champion trailed 3-4 in the first set before winning the next three games. He then continued that momentum with two-straight breaks to open the second set.

David Strassburger cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 before Davis clinched the overall match victory with his 7-6, 6-2 triumph at No. 2.

Davis trailed 0-3 in a first-set tiebreak, but stormed back to win that and earn a break in the first game of the second set.

After Khan won his opening set at No. 6, 6-3, he trailed 4-5 in the second set but won three-straight games to close out the set and claim the match.

Andrew Suver followed that up with his 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 4 before Penzkofer completed the team sweep with his 6-3, 7-6 victory at No. 3.

The win is PLNU's eighth-straight overall and third against an NCAA Division I opponent this season.

"When you're feeling confident and playing well on every court, even if another team steps up on a few courts and has good days, we only have to get four out of seven," Wheeler said. "Another team has to play really well on a lot of courts to take that from us."

Point Loma (10-1 overall) returns to the PLNU Tennis Courts on Saturday at 4 p.m. to take on Middlebury.

"Our depth definitely has been a strength for us but it's coming out every day with consistency," Wheeler said on his team's success this season. "You show up every day, regardless of the opponent, and you're going to bring your best tennis. That's what this team has done so far but I know they're still hungry.

"I know they don't want to just maintain; they want to continue getting better. I think that combination of getting better but making sure to be consistent and bringing it every day has been the recipe for success."
