(SAN DIEGO) For the first time in program history, PLNU Men's Tennis has a double-digit match winning streak.
Â
With Monday's 5-2 win over Williams, Point Loma extended its winning streak to 10 matches, improving to 12-1 overall on the season.
Â
"The guys are really invested and want to be as successful as we can while also getting better at the same time," Head Coach Curt Wheeler said. "That's a big reason for the streak. If we were at the same level that we were a month ago, this streak wouldn't be there.
Â
"I'm looking forward to them continuing to keep that combination of playing good tennis and also striving to get better."
Â
Â
PLNU's streak appeared to be in jeopardy early on, with Williams winning all three doubles matches to take the doubles point.
Â
It was only the third time this season that Point Loma dropped the doubles point, but the Sea Lions responded by winning five of six singles matchups.
Â
"In doubles we didn't bring our best tennis today and credit to Williams as well," Wheeler said. "They were very strong in doubles and started fast.
Â
"The guys did a really good job of handling that adversity. We hadn't lost the doubles point in a few matches, so it was a little bit of a test of our character and confidence. The guys responded really well, came out and played great tennis from the beginning of singles. If they didn't, then it's a match we easily could've lost because Williams is a very good team."
Â
Tyler Davis (6-0, 7-6 at No. 2),
Alexander Leischner (6-4, 6-3 at No. 1),
Nabeel Khan (6-3, 6-2 at No. 6) and
Fabian Penzkofer (6-3, 7-5 at No. 3) all won in straight sets in that order to guarantee PLNU's win.
Â
Andrew Suver then rounded out the Sea Lions' scoring with a thrilling come-from-behind win in a super tiebreak at No. 4 (5-7, 7-6, 10-5).
Â
"There was a lot of good singles play today," Wheeler said. "Andrew finished the match off with a good comeback win after dropping a close first set.
Â
"He's had a lot of close matches lately, a few that haven't gone his way, but today was a great response of just sticking with the way he plays and being confident in that. That was great to see because when he plays his game, he can beat anybody."
Â
Point Loma is scheduled to return to the PLNU Tennis Courts on March 28 for a 5 p.m. match against Biola.
