(SAN DIEGO) PLNU Men's Tennis' double-digit winning streak appeared to be in serious jeopardy against Biola on Tuesday night.
Â
The Eagles led 1-0 after winning the doubles point, then won the first set at singles No. 4, 5 and 6. The visitors also held a 5-2 advantage at No. 3.
Â
Not so fast.
Â
Point Loma stormed back to overcome its deficit and defeat Biola, 4-2, in an intense matchup between two PacWest teams.
"I think a lot of it was confidence," Head Coach Curt Wheeler said of what enabled his team's comeback. "This team and the team members individually just believe in themselves and believe in their teammates a lot. Even when it doesn't start good or if things aren't going well, they expect that things are going to turn around."
Â
And turn around they did.
Â
Â
Â
Alexander Leischner (6-3, 6-0) and
Tyler Davis (6-0, 6-1) cruised to singles victories at No. 1 and 2 respectively.
Â
At No. 3,
Fabian Penzkofer overcame a 2-5 deficit in the first set to win a tiebreak. Then leading 5-4 in the second, Penzkofer broke his opponent's serve to improve to 12-0 in singles this season.
Â
"Our top-three did a really great job of winning in straight sets and getting those points on the board as quickly as possible," Wheeler said.
Â
With a 3-1 overall match advantage, Point Loma still needed to win one of the remaining three singles matches.
Â
The Eagles picked up a three-set win at No. 4 and were prepping to serve for another three-set win at No. 5, before all eyes were on court No. 6, where
Nabeel Khan was locked in a battle with his counterpart from Biola.
Â
After dropping the first set 2-6, Khan responded to win the next two sets in thrilling fashion, both by 7-5 margins after breaking his opponent's serve to clinch each set.
Â
"Our guys came out ready to go in singles and did a great job of staying true to what they do and how they play," Wheeler said. "Singles 4, 5 and 6 were all super close battles that could've gone either way but I'm very happy that Nabeel was able to pull out a big win on 6 to get us that fourth point. David and Alejandro played some great tennis as well."
Â
Khan's forehand winner that clinched his victory sparked joyous celebrations for Point Loma (13-1 overall), now winners of 11-consecutive matches.
Â
PLNU is scheduled to host Menlo on Thursday at 4 p.m. before taking on Azusa Pacific in a highly-anticipated matchup on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Â
APU is the only team to have defeated Point Loma this season.
