(SAN DIEGO) PLNU Men's Tennis is on a roll.
Â
Not only did the Sea Lions extend their program-best winning streak to 12 matches by avenging their only loss of the season, they ended a 26-match losing streak to Azusa Pacific in the process.
Â
Point Loma defeated APU on Saturday, 6-1, for its first victory against the Cougars since April 27, 2011.
Â
"It was a really great performance by the guys, but I'm not surprised either," Head Coach Curt Wheeler said. "They've shown this whole year that they can play good tennis day-in and day-out."
Â
PLNU bounced back from a crushing defeat in doubles, with APU winning both doubles matches that finished, despite the Sea Lions holding 5-3 and 5-2 leads at No. 2 and 3 respectively.
Â
"The way they responded after doubles was huge," Wheeler said. "Against a very good team like this, that could've been a momentum shifter but the guys were ready to come out and put that in the past."
Â
Point Loma showed exactly why its the No. 1 ranked team in the initial PacWest rankings with an emphatic singles display, winning all six singles matches in straight sets.
Â
Â
Andrew Suver picked up PLNU's first victory in singles, as he was leading 6-2, 4-1 before his No. 4 opponent retired.
Â
Alexander Leischner, after winning the first set 6-3, trailed 0-1 in the second set before getting an early break that spurred him on to win the final six games of his No. 1 matchup.
Â
Tyler Davis won his first set at No. 2, 6-2, before getting an early break to take a 3-0 lead in the second on his way to winning that set by an identical 6-2 scoreline.
Â
Fabian Penzkofer then clinched PLNU's team victory with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph at No. 3, improving to 13-0 in singles this season.
Â
David Strassburger got a break in the final game of the second set to claim a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 5, before
Nabeel Khan made it 6-for-6 for PLNU in singles with his 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 6.
Â
"That was a complete team performance," Wheeler said. "To not win a doubles match and lose the doubles point, to then come back and win singles in straight sets was probably the most even team performance I've seen in a long time."
Â
Point Loma (14-1 overall) returns to action this week with two away matches, first at Concordia on Wednesday at 1 p.m. before traveling to take on Biola on Saturday at 2 p.m., as the Sea Lions look to extend their program-best winning streak even further.
Â
"I think from the beginning this group knew it was talented and that we had potential, but it's always a difficult thing to turn talent and potential into performance and results," Wheeler said. "They've been focused all year and have been working hard on playing good tennis.
Â
"They've been mentally tough and have been ready to battle every single point. That consistency has been huge."
