(SAN DIEGO) PLNU Women's Tennis won the doubles point and never looked back in picking up an important 4-0 victory over Biola on Tuesday afternoon.
Â
"The girls came out and played well today," Head Coach
Curt Wheeler said. "They started strong in doubles. Biola is a very strong team on the women's side. Every court was tough, every court was difficult in that way, but the girls played well and had great confidence."
Â
After the visiting Eagles won the first doubles match to finish at No. 1,
Angelique Friedrich and
Joelle Lanz teamed up to even the matchup with a 6-3 victory at No. 2 to set up a winner-take-all No. 3 doubles contest.
Â
Thelma Sepulveda bounced back from a minor injury that had to be looked at by the athletic training staff with great energy, while aces from
Rachel Whittington helped PLNU's No. 3 duo claim a 7-5 win and the doubles point for the Sea Lions.
Â
Point Loma then carried that momentum into singles play, winning all three matches that were finished.
Â
Sepulveda rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 before Whittington won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6.
Â
Then Lanz, with an impressive arsenal of shots and ball placement into the back corners of the court, clinched the match for PLNU with her 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 2.
Â
Friedrich won her first set at No. 3, 6-2, and was level in the second set 6-6 when the match was called.
Â
Amanda Letzring won a first-set tiebreak to lead her No. 4 singles match, 1-0, before trailing in the second set, 2-3, that was left unfinished.
Â
At No. 1,
Arianna Audelo responded from a 3-6 first-set defeat to win the second stanza, 7-5, but her match too was stopped early once the Sea Lions reached the necessary four points to clinch the overall win.
Â
Point Loma (11-4 overall) returns to the PLNU Tennis Courts on Saturday to host Azusa Pacific.
Â
Back on Feb. 17 in Azusa, APU issued PLNU a 6-1 defeat, which was Point Loma's last loss before embarking on a season-high seven-match winning streak.
