(HILO, Hawaii) No. 23 Hawaii Hilo kept No. 11 PLNU Baseball's offense at bay for the first three games of their four-game set, before the Sea Lions' bats broke out in the final matchup to avoid a sweep.
Â
Hilo won three-straight close games to start the series by scores of 2-1, 6-4 and 3-1. The Vulcans spoiled
Jakob Christian's eight-game home run streak, which was just one game shy of tying the NCAA record, and
Dylan Miller's stellar start in Monday's first game when the right hander went eight innings and allowed only two runs.
Â
However, Point Loma made sure it wouldn't leave the Big Island empty-handed by winning the fourth and final game of the series, 7-4, scoring more runs than it had in the first three games combined.
Â
The Sea Lions wasted no time getting on the board in Tuesday's second game, scoring four first-inning runs after their first three hitters got on base to load the bases.
Â
PLNU scored a run after each of the next four at-bats, on
Hunter Otjen's RBI fielder's choice,
Jack Malone's single to right,
Joey Nicolai's hit by pitch and
Jake Entrekin's sacrifice fly.
Â
UHH got a run back in the bottom half, but Point Loma immediately canceled out that run in the top of the second. Otjen recorded his second RBI of the game, this time with a sacrifice fly to score
Bryson Hashimoto, who advanced to third on a Christian double.
Â
The Vulcans scored again in the bottom of the third, before the Sea Lions scored once in the top of the fourth on
Scott Anderson's run-scoring single and another in the top of the fifth on Entrekin's RBI-base hit.
Â
The hosts then scored twice in the bottom of the fifth, but the visitors maintained their three-run lead the rest of the way thanks a two-inning save from
Cole Hillier to prevent a Hilo sweep.
Â
Point Loma (10-6 overall, 1-3 PacWest) remains in the Aloha State to take on Hawaii Pacific in doubleheaders on Saturday and Monday.
