(SAN DIEGO)
Jakob Christian homered twice, including a walk-off shot to win game one, helping No. 25 PLNU Baseball complete a series sweep of Concordia with a pair of victories on Saturday, 2-1 and 6-3.
Â
With the two homers, Christian tied the single-season program record for home runs with 20 on the year.
After Christian's RBI-groundout in the first inning of game one, CUI tied the game in the fifth with an unearned run, before the game went into extra innings tied 1-1.
Â
Then to lead off the bottom of the 10th, Christian smashed a no-doubter over the left-center fence on the first pitch he saw to walk it off for PLNU.
"I was just trying to find something early in the count and I was on top of the fastball," Christian said. "He gave it to me at the letters and I just didn't miss it. I knew it right away."
Â
Â
Point Loma carried that momentum into the second game, scoring twice in the bottom of the first on a
David Garcia walk and a
Jack Malone sacrifice fly.
Â
Scott Anderson, who had four hits in both games on Saturday, then hit a solo shot to left in the bottom half of the second.
Â
Â
CUI responded to tie the game with three runs in the top of the third, only for
Tommy Burleson to restore PLNU's advantage with a two-out RBI-single in the bottom half.
Â
Â
Then in the fourth, after Garcia was intentionally walked to load the bases, Malone was hit by a pitch to double the Sea Lions' lead, 5-3.
Christian then hit his second homer of the day, this one to right field in the sixth inning, moving him into a tie for the NCAA Division II lead for home runs.
Â
Â
PLNU got solid pitching performances from both starters.
Cole Colleran threw five innings in game one, giving up only an unearned run, while striking out seven.
Ray Cebulski (five strikeouts) earned his fourth win of the season in game two after allowing three runs in his five innings of work.
Â
Cole Hillier earned the game one victory, pitching three shutout innings out of the bullpen while striking out four.
Troy Wentworth pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in relief of Cebulski in game two, before
Hunter Otjen recorded the final out with a strikeout to register his third save of the season.
Â
With the series sweep, Point Loma (25-11 overall, 13-7 PacWest) moves just a half-game behind Fresno Pacific in the PacWest standings.
Â
The Sea Lions return to Carroll B. Land Stadium next weekend for a four-game series with Holy Names, beginning with a doubleheader on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
