(LA MIRADA, Calif.) Two big innings led No. 24 PLNU Baseball to a doubleheader sweep of Biola on Friday in La Mirada.
Trailing 4-2 in game one, Point Loma scored five in the sixth inning on its way to a 7-6 victory, before the Sea Lions topped that with seven runs in the fifth inning of game two, breaking open a 3-3 game to ultimately win 11-5.
Point Loma fell behind by four runs early in game one after Biola scored one in the first and three in the second.
The Sea Lions cut their deficit in half in the top of the third on RBI-singles from
Jakob Christian and
Hunter Otjen, before taking the lead for the first time with five runs in the sixth.
J.J. Gerarden's sacrifice bunt scored one, before
Owen May smashed his first collegiate home run, a three-run shot to left center, to put PLNU up by two.
Jake Entrekin plated another with his base hit through the left side, which proved to be crucial after the Eagles responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to make it a one-run game.
Cole Hillier then came on in relief to pitch the final two innings and earn his fifth save of the season.
Then in game two, Point Loma jumped out to an early 3-1 lead after a pair of sacrifice flies from Otjen and Entrekin, with a Christian RBI-single to right in between.
After BU tied it up with a pair of runs in the third, PLNU unloaded for seven runs in the fifth, including six with two outs.
Gerarden's base hit scored the first run of the inning to restore the Sea Lions' advantage, before
Scott Anderson,
Connor Hill and Christian followed up with two-out RBI-singles.
Entrekin's blooper double scored two more, with the visitors tacking on another on a Biola error.
Then in the sixth, Anderson's run-scoring triple, his fourth hit of the game, rounded out PLNU's scoring.
Point Loma (21-9 overall, 9-5 PacWest) returns home to Carroll B. Land Stadium on Saturday for the final two games of its series with Biola. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for noon.
