(HONOLULU) PLNU Volleyball made an emphatic start to its trip to the Aloha State, sweeping Hawaii Pacific 3-0 (25-7, 25-14, 25-18) on Wednesday night.
The win is Point Loma's third-straight sweep to open up PacWest play.
"Tonight was a good start for an always difficult Hawaii road trip," Head Coach
Jonathan Scott said.
Leading 9-7 in the opening stanza, the Sea Lions closed the first set on a 16-0 run on
Bailey Williams' serve. PLNU held HPU to a miniscule -0.241 attack % in the first.
"That 16-point run was especially fun because we were locked in," Scott said. "Bailey was locked in with her serve. Our blockers were locked in. Our defense was just locked in."
That momentum carried into the second set, with Point Loma winning the first four points to make it 20 points in-a-row overall.
Then with a 13-11 lead in set two, the Sea Lions went on another long run, this time a 9-0 streak.
Claire Smith,
Abigail Nua and
Anna Massari each recorded a pair of kills during that stretch with
Torina Hommes serving.
The third set was the most competitive of the three before PLNU completed the sweep by winning the final five points of the match, helped by a couple block assists each from Hommes and
Mariah Hughes.
Nua led all players with 15 kills and tallied a double-double with her 10 digs. Smith added nine kills, while Hommes posted an impressive stat line with eight kills and seven blocks. Williams joined Nua with double-digit digs (10).
Point Loma (6-4 overall, 3-0 PacWest) next faces its toughest test in the conference to date, as PLNU takes on No. 12 Chaminade on Thursday at 10 p.m. PT / 7 p.m. HT.
