(HONOLULU) PLNU Women's Volleyball faced its toughest test to date in conference play on Thursday night.
The Sea Lions passed with flying colors.
Point Loma upset No. 12 and previously unbeaten Chaminade in four sets (21-25, 25-11, 25-20, 25-20) to remain perfect in the PacWest.
"The team battled," Head Coach
Jonathan Scott said. "We won with a completely different brand of volleyball than yesterday."
After dropping the first set against the Silverswords, the Sea Lions responded by winning the next three, including a resounding set two victory.
Leading 16-11 in the second, Point Loma didn't lose a point the rest of the set, with kills from
Mariah Hughes bookending a 9-0 run that evened the match at one set apiece.
That momentum carried over into the next set, with PLNU winning the first four points of the third. After Chaminade fought back to take the lead, Point Loma pulled back ahead late, with a combined block from
Torina Hommes and
Lauren Phillips sparking a 4-0 streak to close out the set.
The Silverswords threatened to force a deciding fifth set, leading by as many as four in the fourth. Then with the hosts up 13-12, the visitors scored five points in-a-row to take back control.
Chaminade saved three match points, only for a service error to clinch the set and the match for Point Loma.
Abigail Nua posted her second-straight double-double, tallying 11 kills and 11 digs, with
Anna Massari (11 kills, six blocks) and Hommes (10 kills, three blocks) joining her with double-digit kills.
Sophia Baugh dished out 22 assists, while Phillips added 18 assists and four blocks.
Macy Reynolds set a new career-high with 23 digs.
Point Loma (7-4 overall, 4-0 PacWest) concludes its trip to the Aloha State on Saturday at Hawaii Hilo.
First serve is scheduled for 10 p.m. PT / 7 p.m. HT, with the Sea Lions seeking a road sweep of the PacWest Hawaii schools for the second-straight year.
