(HILO, Hawaii) PLNU Volleyball completed a road sweep of the PacWest Hawaii schools for the second-straight year, defeating Hawaii Hilo in five sets (20-25, 25-12, 25-19, 24-26, 16-14) on Saturday night.
Similar to its win on Thursday night at No. 12 Chaminade, Point Loma responded from dropping the first set to winning the second one in resounding fashion, while holding UH Hilo to a -0.081 attack % in the second stanza.
Back-to-back kills from
Claire Smith to start the third set sparked a 4-0 run for the Sea Lions, who then took a two-set-to-one lead after
Anna Massari and
Abigail Nua combined for a block.
The hosts bounced back to win the first four points of the fourth set and led by as many as six before earning set point at 24-21. PLNU saved three set points, the last coming on a solo block from
Grace Hicks, only for UH Hilo to force a deciding fifth set by winning the next two points.
A 5-0 run in the final stanza gave Point Loma an early 6-3 advantage before the Sea Lions led by as many as four.
The Vulcans fought back to save match point and tie the set at 14 apiece, but a Massari kill and UH Hilo attacking error then clinched PLNU's fifth-straight victory.
Torina Hommes (16), Smith (14) and Massari (14) all posted double-digit kills, while Massari (11 blocks) and Hicks (seven blocks) dominated at the net.
Sophia Baugh set a new career-high with 30 assists, while
Macy Reynolds also set a new personal-best mark with 32 digs.
Point Loma 8-4 overall (5-0 PacWest) will remain on the road for its next match at Concordia on Saturday in Irvine at 5 p.m.
