(HONOLULU) PLNU Women's Basketball completed an epic comeback at Hawai'i Pacific on Thursday night, overturning a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit before winning 58-57 in overtime.
"Wow that was crazy," Head Coach
Charity Elliott said. "We just kept battling and kept believing in each other. In the fourth quarter we just turned it on."
HPU won each of the first three quarters to lead by double digits going into the fourth, which PLNU began with a 10-0 run to cut its deficit to four with 6:16 remaining.
The Sharks extended their advantage to as many as seven with 2:43 to play, only for the Sea Lions to end regulation on a 9-2 stretch, with
Katie Scott's layup with 27 seconds remaining forcing an extra period.
To start overtime, a 3-point play from
Hannah Golan gave Point Loma its first lead since the opening quarter.
Then with HPU up by one late in the extra period, PLNU came up clutch on the offensive glass, corralling two offensive rebounds which ultimately led to Scott's go-ahead basket with 16 seconds on the clock.
Grace Moawad's block on the other end then sealed the comeback victory.
Tavia Rowell led the team with 13 points, while Scott nearly posted a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Tippins also added 12 points in the win.
"Grace led us defensively in the fourth and we had some huge buckets by Eiley, Tavia and Katie," Elliott said. "
Ellie Turk had six steals and followed the scout to a T. Hannah had some huge rebounds down the stretch."
Point Loma (10-9 overall, 6-5 PacWest) looks to conclude a perfect trip to the Aloha State on Saturday with a 3 p.m. PT / 1 p.m. HT matchup at Chaminade in Honolulu.
"I'm just so proud and as (women's soccer head coach) Kristi Kiely says, 'We are just adding experience every day to our toolbox,'" Elliott said. "This one will be one we remember for a long time and I could not be prouder."
