(SAN DIEGO)
Coby Barnes' buzzer-beating 3-pointer lifted PLNU Men's Basketball to an incredible comeback victory over visiting Hawai'i Hilo on Saturday evening, 74-71.
Â
With just 0.6 seconds remaining,
Zack Paulsen inbounded to Barnes in the corner to splash a triple and spark what seemed to be unlikely celebrations for the home team inside Golden Gym.
Â
Point Loma trailed by as many as 16 in the second half before completing its largest comeback victory of the year, winning its third-straight game to set up a showdown with Biola on Wednesday for first place in the PacWest standings.
Â
PLNU's deficit was 14 points at halftime after shooting just 28.6% in the opening 20 minutes.
Â
The Sea Lions increased that to 65.2% in the second half, as the hosts went on a 14-0 run to get back into the game.
Â
Jake Lifgren and Paulsen each hit a pair of 3's during that stretch, with Paulsen's second triple forcing a Vulcans timeout.
Â
Â
Tyce Paulsen then gave PLNU its first lead since the opening half with a steal and layup at the other end with 12:46 to play.
Â
Â
The two teams traded leads the rest of the way until the Sea Lions appeared to take control late, as a pair of Barnes free throws put the hosts up by four with 26 seconds remaining.
Â
The visitors then cut their deficit in half and after PLNU made one of two at the line, UHH tied it up at 71 apiece with a 3-pointer with 12 seconds remaining.
Â
Point Loma then called timeout with 3.5 seconds left but had its inbounds pass tipped out of play. Fortunately for the Sea Lions, the last touch was by a Vulcans player, giving PLNU one last chance to win it before overtime.
Â
Barnes took full advantage.
Â
Â
His game-winning 3-pointer made it four Sea Lions in double figures, raising his scoring total to 12 points. Lifgren led all players with 22 points with
Zack Paulsen close behind with 21.
Wynton Brown added 13 points and eight rebounds.
Â
Point Loma (10-4 overall, 5-1 PacWest) hosts Biola (11-4, 6-1) on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. with first place in the PacWest standings on the line.
