(SAN DIEGO) Nearly four Sea Lions recorded double-digit kills on Thursday night, as No. 20 PLNU Volleyball swept Azusa Pacific (25-22, 25-23, 25-19) in a battle of PacWest unbeatens on Dig Pink Night in Golden Gym.
Â
Both Point Loma and APU entered the night atop the conference standings with 5-0 records in PacWest play, before the Sea Lions handed the Cougars their first conference loss of the year.
Â
Point Loma (12-0 overall, 6-0 PacWest), off to its second-best start to a season in program history behind its 2001 squad (17-0), is now one of only two remaining teams still undefeated in PacWest play along with No. 9 Chaminade (12-4, 5-0).
Â
Abigail Nua and
Saren Rogers led all players with 15 kills, while
Anna Massari added 11 and
Genevieve Hara recorded nine.
Â
Point Loma hit .260 as a team for the match, including .316 in the opening stanza, which Nua clinched with her sixth kill of the set.
Â
The Sea Lions led by as many as six in the second before the hosts held off a late APU surge to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Â
A miraculous kill from Nua off her foot tied the third set at 5-5, swinging the momentum back in PLNU's favor.
Â
Â
On consecutive points,
Anna Massari and
Avery Allemann combined for a block before Massari's solo block gave Point Loma a four-point advantage.
Â
Back-to-back kills from Rogers then gave the Sea Lions a five-point cushion at 20-15. APU responded by scoring three straight, only for PLNU to score five of the final six points, as Nua took over late with three kills in that stretch, including on match point.
Â
