PLNU CONTINUES WINNING STREAK, PREVAILS IN HOME OPENER

(SAN DIEGO) Point Loma Men's Soccer enjoyed its long-awaited home opener on the PLNU Soccer Field, as the Sea Lions defeated Westmont 3-1 on Saturday to win its fifth straight match and remain unbeaten in PacWest play.

"It was a highly competitive contest with two good teams," Head Coach Phil Wolf said. "Westmont asked us a lot of questions today and made us chase the football more than usual. But that happens when two good teams who are committed to play face off."

The win is Point Loma's third consecutive 3-1 victory, while Felix Calero scored in his third straight game to get the Sea Lions off on the right foot.

Milan Diklic surged forward on the dribble and played a through ball to Elijah Langford, whose shot was blocked initially. The rebound eventually came back to Langford, who passed to Calero to curl inside the right post from around the penalty spot.

"The goal in the first half was really important as I thought up to the point Westmont was the aggressor," Wolf said.

Langford assisted again on Point Loma's second goal, sending Emmett Layman through at goal to double the Sea Lions' lead.

Layman collected Langford's through ball before slotting his shot inside the far right post to put PLNU up 2-0.

Despite going a man down, Point Loma then added a third through Christopher Burgos Lara.

Simon Sagal, who assisted all three goals in Thursday's win over Vanguard, picked up another assist on Saturday after he intercepted a pass in the midfield and passed to a streaking Burgos Lara.

The right winger then made no mistake with his finish, shooting through the goalkeeper's legs to put the game out of reach.

"In the second half I thought we were the more dangerous of the teams and were rewarded with two good goals," Wolf said. "After the red card we did well to only concede once as Westmont put a lot of pressure on us."

Point Loma (6-1-2, overall, 4-0 PacWest), currently atop the conference standings, continues PacWest play on Wednesday night at Azusa Pacific. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

"I am very happy with the group as we are sitting on 12 points after four really tough matches," Wolf said. "Now we need to rest up, try and get healthy and go again on Wednesday against a very good APU team."
